What time does the race start?
Post time is 6:02 CST
I want every horse to have a safe race, I want Journalism to win b/c I like his name, and if Journalism doesn’t win, I just want Bob Baffert’s horse to not win.
Man, when they play My Old Kentucky home, I always think of how my grandma would sing along to it when we’d watch.
She was born in Kentucky, moved to Indiana as a kid, so…Kentuckian at heart though she was from an area closer to Cincinnati than Louisville.
So happy for Bill Mott!
Yeah, I’m glad to see it go to a trainer who doesn’t have a lot of Derby wins, don’t know/recall much about Mott, specifically as I’ve not followed racing as closely the last several years (have heard of him, just not remembering a lot of details about him as a trainer)
I want to see the start again. Was it Neoequos who veered out and nearly took out a bunch?
I usually pick by “pretty horse/I like the name” but then again I don’t bet.
If I were the betting sort with my weird picks, I’d have made IDEK how much one year.
The year Rich Strike won, I said “it’d be so cool if that horse won” because he wasn’t even expected to be in the race, then some other horse scratched and he got in. He was a chestnut, too, and he sort of reminded me of my first horse (chestnut OTTB gelding) so, yeah.
Man, the mixed feelings. I like Bill Mott, but I just can’t support a Godolphin horse. I actually had Sovereignty as my top 1-2, but just couldn’t put to any part of the piddly $50 I bet (total, LOL) on him for the Triple Crown.
Happy for everyone except Sheik Mohammed.
Anyone know where sandman finished? He was my pick (just because he’s beautiful lol)
So happy all came home safe and and a great day of racing!
Maybe Citizen Bull veered out?
And Baffert’s horse lost…
As usual, my non horsey father picks a name/number last minute and gets the win .
That too yes
I mean that’s kinda what I do most years when I’m not paying much attention.
Like I said - I don’t bet but maaaan if I were the betting sort I coulda made some money the year Rich Strike won, what were his odds, 80-1?
First year I really watched the Derby was in '09. I was 16 and think I said I just wanted a long shot/unlikely horse to win. Mine That Bird won.
Citizen Bull came blasting out of the gate (as expected) and veered a few paths to the outside while someone else (not sure who) veered in. I’m curious to see the replays, particularly the head on.
Whoo hoo I won $8.38! After betting $34. I’ve been following racing for 40 years and I remain a crappy handicapper–which is why I almost never bet. I don’t mind wasting a few bucks for fun, heh.
Mohammed is a product of his culture, which isn’t an excuse but it’s the truth. Take some comfort in knowing that the Godolphin staff will be very well rewarded.
Mott is pure class, one of the younger “old school” horsemen.
Mott had Codys Wish (whos birthday is today BTW) and also won the Derby with Country House when the horse that crossed the wire first was DQd. Has a very good reputation as a real horseman, not flashy or noisy.
I thought Baeza ran a really good race; he made up a ton of ground in the last 1/2 mile and was soooo close there at the end!
It’s hard to like him, I get it. A lot of what we have learned is indefensible.
But… he deserves this, too. Horse racing world wide would be at a loss without his support.
