I have a TB mare that I am trying to get some weight on and this product was recommended to me today by my local feed store owner. My mare is just over 6 months pregnant, she currently gets 4 lbs of TC growth, 1 oz mare plus and a scoop of Vapro Fat Cat twice a day, a flake of alfalfa once a day, and has a coastal grass round bale (no real grass in her paddock :(). Has anyone tried this oil? TIA.
I use it, on my vet’s reccomendation, for my now 30 year old. It definitely helps him keep the weight on over the winter.
6 months pregnant, only 4lb TC Growth, I’d be adding more Growth (and dropping the Fat Cat for now) long before adding oil.

4 lbs twice a day, 8 lbs per day up from 6 to try to get some weight on her.
Thanks, Janet. My feed store owner fees the oil to a 29 year old mare and you would never know she is 29. She looks fabulous. I will ask my vet about it as well. Fat Cat has worked well for me in the past. I just brought this mare back from turnout about a month ago and she has put on some weight but not as much as I would like for this time of year.
Sorry, re-reading the OP I see how I mis-read that
Can you add more alfalfa? You could add 1lb a-pellets to each of her feedings, making it 5lb of concentrates. Can you throw her another flake of alf hay?
Coastal can be pretty poor quality, it’s hard to grow it into really nice hay though it can be done.
You can even go to 5lb Growth each feeding, that would be more calories than adding 1lb a-pellets.
Thanks JB. I can increase her alfalfa but will have to increase my other mare too which is fine because that mare just hit her third trimester. They eat grain in stalls but hay in the paddock. I will add a third feeding of 2 lbs and see how she looks in a couple weeks. Thank you for the comments
