Triple Crown Senior or Purina Ultium Senior

I have a 24 year old gelding. Still in regular work. Not a great hay eater. Has Cushing’s. Has access to grass and hay 24/7 this time of year. Weight is good but could use more muscle.

I had been giving him 8 lbs Triple Crown Senior until this spring. Somewhat of picky eater even with this. Then I decided to experiment and see if I lowered his volume of grain, whether his hay intake would improve. So I switched him to AminoTrace, served in Triple Crown Senior to ensure he would eat it. So now he’s getting 3 lbs TCS plus the AminoTrace.

However, he’s not loving this. I’m considering switching him to Purina Ultium Senior, which can be fed at a minimum of 4 lbs whereas TCS is a minimum of 6 lbs. I have to supplement copper/zinc/biotin for either, so that’s a wash.

Anyone have any better luck with the Purina?

My local grain store is a Purina store, so I can easily get these two brands. Anything else is more of an effort plus I like to give them my business.

Any suggestions on tastiest copper/zinc/biotin would also be helpful. We’ve tried the Uckele pellets of copper/zinc - not a big winner. We’ve also tried the Custom Equine Nutrition blend of copper/zinc and also not popular. For biotin, I bought the Nanric one and was giving something like 1/4 dose and that is also very unpopular. This is also part of why I thought I’d try AminoTrace - was hoping it was tastier for getting the trace minerals in. I haven’t tried VT blend because I can’t even get my least picky eater to eat that (even the pellets). Have not yet tried KIS or any of the HorseTech options. Pellets are definitely better than powder/granular as he does NOT like wet grain.

I was comparing Purina Ultium Senior and TC Senior Diamond/Gold and went with Purina because it has a slightly lower feeding rate. Price wise they’re about the same for me. Too soon to say how my horse is doing on it. For copper/zinc and biotin, have you tried mad barn’s? Mine eat that readily.

I can’t help with the TC vs Ultium Senior products, but I will say that my horse eats KIS Trace very well in his soaked meals. They recently came out with an anise & molasses flavored option for pickier eaters. Mine liked the original anise & fenugreek flavor just fine already and likes the molasses one too.

They do have it in pelleted form as well.

Also, if you’d rather do the Vermont Blend, the Vermont Blend PRO is a much smaller serving. That could help.

Purina Ultium Senior is much tastier to my horses than TCS.

They are both excellent options.
