Triple Crown Sr to Gold - Transition Plan?

Hi all - quick question. For those that moved from TC Sr to TC Sr Gold - how much of a changeover did you do? Feels like it would be a fairly low impact change but want to err on side of caution.

Thanks

I do every changeover the same.

3/4 of the old grain, 1/4 of the new for one week.
1/2 and 1/2 for one week.
1/4 old, 3/4 new for one week.
New grain.

That’s probably overkill, especially in this case, but I’ve never had gastric upset doing it that way.

I introduce new supplements slowly as well.

I change between like feeds with zero change over and zero issue.

I would call these like feeds and wouldn’t hesitate going straight from one to the other.

Thanks for the replies. Will likely merge your two answers into a modified plan as they are so similar. Hoping they like the Gold as seems like a really good step up for these two horses.

This is how the farm I work at does it. We have many horses that come in for training, boarding, new lesson pony, or trial with none of their own feed. We have 4 feed types plus a ration balancer. The BO puts them on whatever was closest, if she knew what they were getting. If not, she puts them on what she thinks is best based on body condition.
We have had maybe 12 horses in this year with no issues.

That’s also what I do, but in a shorter timeframe, like a few days for each step.

I don’t know of any feeds that I would consider so “like” that I wouldn’t do some sort of transition, just to be safe. Horses are so damn fragile that it’s just not worth the risk. I also transition between loads of hay. If I get a new horse in with no grain at all (rare) I feed forage and just slowly add in whatever grain I want to put them on.

You’ll find that Senior Gold is a lot drier and more powdery than original Senior. The good news is, it’s less likely to brick this time of year. I loved the idea of the Gold but gave up on it after getting 8 or so bags infested with little beetles over about a 6-month period. I don’t know why they would just be in the Senior Gold, but I’ve never had those beetles in any other TC grain from the same feed store. Of course they contaminated my storage bins too. Hope you have better luck!

I asked Triple Crown about this transition. They said none was necessary as the feeds are so similar, but it would probably be a good idea to do a gradual transition just for taste reasons.

Thanks all for the input. Tried adding some to breakfast this morning and so far the jury is out as to whether they like it. Will keep adding a little to the regular to see if I can convince them. I love the promise of it but have seen others ran into challenges getting horses to eat it.

Thanks again!

PS - had to reset password to post and the system was being stubborn about my old user name so if I get it fixed and it goes back to CalPal it’s legit.

Unless you’ve got a very sensitive or finicky Dobbin, switching between feeds that are similar, even across brands, can really be done cold turkey. There’s just not anything so dramatically different about them

My oldster didn’t love the Senior Gold and I swapped to Nutrena XF which she ate up as well or better than her TC Senior. Really seemed to bring her top line back and a nice bloom. Could be an option if they stay meh on the Gold.

Thanks for the suggestion on the Nutrena. Hoping they get to like the Gold but so far not so much.
