Troxel vs. Tipperary Fit

I’m interested in ordering the new Tipperary Sportage 8500 helmet. I wear a Medium in Troxel helmets. It seems like I’d wear a Large in the Tipperary, but I’m not sure since I’ve never tried one on. I have no idea what my head measures.

Thanks!

Wouldn’t a tape measure solve that problem?!?!?!

I just bought a new IRH. I tried Troxels, Charles Owens, and another whose name I forgot. Only the IRH fit because only IRH offers specific sizes (not S, M, L, XL) with a “long oval” option. With all the others I got good contact at forehead and back of head and could put my pinkie finger between my skull and the helmet at the temple. That wasn’t going to work.

The best bet is to go to your local vendor and try some on. Helmets are kind of like shoes, in that they all have a bit of a different fit. The helmet I replaced was a Troxel (L) that did fit OK (but was always no better than OK). No Troxel that I tried in three different stores even came close to correct fit.

When it comes to safety gear it’s better to buy a bit up the tree to get the best fit and quality. The difference in price that you pay will be way less than the deductable on your medical insurance for the ER visit.

The problem is that I’m at work… so no measuring tape. I want to order from the VTO online sale today… so no time to run to the tack store. I figured that enough people here have probably tried on both and could offer some advice about size.

I’m not much help, but I had a Troxel for years and a few years ago switched it for an IRH - by far more comfy for me. My DH wears a Troxel, finds my IRH awful…

I have tried the older model Tipperary and found it downright painful…

Really strongly suggest you run to a tack store and try them first! Each line has a different shape.

FWIW, I wear a L in the Troxel Sierra, a L in the old Tipperary Sportage, and a L in the brand new Tipperaries as well. (I work at a tack store so I know my size in ALL the helmets! ) So I think they run pretty similar to Troxels, although they are a slightly different shape.

I wear a L in the Troxel, and just tried a L in the new Tipp. Sent the Tipp back as I have a rounder head and it didn’t fit well. Ended up going with the Chuck Owens this time around. Just another opinion to help you along. The new Tipp is nice though.

I have a M Troxel Legacy Gold but my head is on the high end of their measurement scale. So I tried on a L Tipperary and it fit, but man was it HUGE!!! Made me look like a mushroom.

I tried one of the original models of Tipperary helmet. Seemed to fit fine in the store. However, every time I rode in it I got the most severe headache. I ended up returning it, but had to take store credit. So next I tried a Troxel. It fits ok and I still wear it, but I had the opportunity about 6 months later to get a good sale price on an IRH and purchased it. I find it more comfortable. I’m one of the long oval folks. I always used to use an IRH until some of the other brands came out. I tried a Troxel helmet for showing, but find that I still go back to IRH as they fit me the best.

Well, even though I wear a Medium Troxel, I ordered a Large Tipperary 8500 from VTO. I measured my head when I got home last night and it’s 22". If the Tipperary doesn’t fit, I can always return it.

Sizing on 8500…?

So what is the consensus on the 8500? Do they run smaller than the old classic Sportage (model 7000)?

The 8000’s are the 'shroom model, they were bad!

Glad to see the 8500’s out, would love to know if I need a size up or stick with medium like my old Sportage.

2Jakes,

From what I understand the 8500 is almost the same as the old sportage. In the mushroom 8000 I would need a XL. In the 8500 I would need a L. They don’t even offer a XL in the 8500 to my knowledge.

So to the point - get whatever size you had in the old sportage 7000 and I think you will be set.
