Truly oversized open front boots?

I have a dinosaur of a young jumper (he’s only 17.2 but he’s a thick, old school Dutch Warmblood with a lot of bone). I’m struggling to find boots that fit him. I can get by with XL and XXL Dover sport boots for flatting, but it’s been a hassle to find open fronts that fit.

The largest size Veredus boots are too small. XL Equifits (not the D-Teq model, the original with Velcro) fit okay, but I prefer a harder shell, and he’s already destroyed the stitching on the hind boots after very little wear, so I’m unwilling to spend so much on something that doesn’t last.

He doesn’t fit into the standard Eskadrons. I am at my wits end trying to find boots that fit.

Does anyone else have a moose of a horse with solid legs? What have you found that works? I prefer a hard shell with Velcro, but I’m willing to be flexible at this point. I also don’t mind paying more as long as the quality is there. Thanks in advance, this horse is truly frustrating to find tack for lol.

In a similar situation. Someone suggested Kavallerie that they purchased via Amazon. I have had good luck previously with XL in Veredus, but the supply was not good when I was looking and they are pricey, especially for a loaner horse. CWD size 4 will work on this horse, but see current CWD thread and they are pricey. I ended up with closed front boots for this horse as the less expensive open fronts I found bulged at the lower end, Riding Warehouse said that similarly priced open fronts were going to do that, and she travels a bit too close for that to be viable. The owner then advised polos, which is what I’ve been doing, but that doesn’t answer your question.

Geez, they’re hard to find! Started searching on the tack sites I bought from when we had full drafts for driving & turning up nothing. Only tendon boots.

Here’s a thought: could you have them custom made?

The old style Beval ones were HUGE. I’ll look and see if I have any if you’re interested. I sold the dinosaur and now just ride a minivan

@vxf111 Thank you, I’d definitely be interested!

@Peggy I tried Kavallerie previously with a different horse. I seem to remember the stitching wearing out fast, but I can look again. I haven’t found any XL Veredus boots outside of bells. Even the last open fronts I got, the box only indicated they came in S, M, and L.

@TheDBYC I would be open to custom if the quality matches the price. If you have any recommendations, I’m all ears. I’ve always had horses that fit off the rack boots, so I’ve never had to go custom before.

:joy:

Seconding this - as a junior I purchased a pair of Beval boots with the fur on deep, deep discount prior to vetting a dinosaur who ended up going home. They were the most enormous things I have ever seen. They would have fit a rhinoceros. I don’t remember what size they were, but I think I remember that the old ones ran large. The sheepskin ones appear to be somewhat readily available on consignment and resale shops and if you know your horse’s leg circumference, and the boot owner can take the same off of their horse, you may be able to translate the old numerical sizing into something useful.

Have you tried the Le Mieux open front boots?

They look generously sized.

I’m a fan of our Majyk Equipe open front boots but our horses are around 16’ 2”-17 hands and under 1500#. Maybe email the company and ask if they can add an inch to the straps?
