Trusted Texas trainer

Looking for advice. My OTTB is in the process of getting started back under saddle and small jumps after getting Kissing Spine surgery. He feels great, back has never been stronger, he’s super relaxed, and happy. But he is still a big mover and its become apparent that when he’s excited, I can’t help but get tense, which he reacts to. We are not a good fit.

I think the best case for us both is to sell him to a home where he can be in much more capable hands, hands that want a very athletic. But I will not do that until I can make sure he’s in a good spot over small fences, which I do not have the mental fortitude to do without getting tense.

So on that note, I am looking for recommendations for trainers within an hour to an hour and a half from Austin with a kind but firm hand, experienced in OTTBs, and capable of starting a horse back over fences (< 2’). I’d like to send him somewhere for ~30-60 days OR have someone come out 1x/week to where he’s boarded.

Thanks y’all.

Has he jumped bigger stuff before, or is he just getting started over fences in general?

He was regularly coursing 2’ and beginning to try the bigger 2’3" pre-surgery. I’m really just hoping a trainer can help him build confidence and find his calm when jumping. He certainly has the ability to be doing the big stuff

I think that’s going to be a bit of a tough sell, if he wasn’t doing it pre-surgery. I think you can find a good trainer to get him going, but I don’t know how vocal I would be about UL prospect when it comes time to sell.

Best of luck!
