Trying to remember name of horse-related movie

This movie was probably made-for-TV or went straight to DVD. I saw it about 40 times over a 1-2 year period (ok I exaggerate a little) because one minor cable station played it almost every night. It’s been long enough that I’d actually watch it again! Do not be fooled into thinking it is of great quality – it’s schmaltzy, features horses and has a happy ending.

Anyway, the main character (college-aged kid, possibly famous/quasi-famous actor) did something bad at home in California, and was packed off to his ??? relative on a horse ranch. He of course starts out sullen and rebellious, and of course turns around. The relative is going to lose the ranch. Turns out the kid does remember something from the economics classes he flunked out of in college, and comes up with a plan to save the ranch. (I completely forget what the plan is.) I think he gallops in on a horse while the auctioneer is starting the bidding for farm equipment and furniture. Of course everyone lives happily ever after. Sniff sniff.

So what IS this movie?

Horse Sense. It was a disney channel original movie. I loved it!!

Yes! I loved this movie, and I seem to recall watching one about a young girl becoming a jockey over and over and over! It was another made for TV Disney movie. I can’t remember that one either.

Ready to Run!

With the talking horse!

And Flash! There was one that was an Animal Planet original that I just loved about a girl that gets in trouble so she’s packed off to a ranch and the lady teaches her to ride english and I can’t find the name of it… I remember the cheesy part where the horse throws her off as soon as she gets on and the lady says, “You’re so light he didn’t realize you were up there!”

I love cheesy feel-good horse movies…

ETA: Found it! Dark Horse, it’s even cheesier than I remember…

Big Spender was another one I watched over and over  I’m pretty sure that one was on animal planet.

Don’t forget Wild Hearts Can’t be Broken! When I started watching Burn Notice I couldn’t believe it was the same girl.

Yes!

And Sylvester!

And A Pony For Danny!

Thanks everyone! That is indeed the movie! It’s available on YouTube, in about 10 separate episodes. Maybe I will check out Netflix first. But when I first got Netflix streaming, I searched for horse movies and watched a lot of them. And I don’t know about the whole Disney/Netflix connection anyway.

What was the name of the movie with the girl going blind and the grey horse named Oliver Cromwell?

That was a personal pre-teen favorite of mine.

I don’t remember the horses’ name, but are you thinking of Breaking Free?

Other older horse movies I love to watch occasionally are Danny, Sylvester, and Blue Fire Lady.

That was Lightening The White Stallion.

Where the horses change colors as they go around the course. Rob Gage plays a douche-y show jumper. It’s freaking classic.

Of course, it is on YouTube too!

I love how the gray horse goes from shaggy maned to perfectly braided in mid-course.

Haha! That’s it! The plots for horse movies are all the same. Some tragically affected young person, a damaged horse owned by someone else that only the affected young person can ride and the magikal transformation in a few short weeks to riding at the top levels of the sport and beating out all the pros for large sums of money and living happily ever after.

Horse movies never seem based in reality and are all fodder for the “cowboy wannabes” and crazy people who romanticize horses and think that they all poop rainbows and butterflies and want to live free from the confines of a stable and run amuck on acres of wild pastures.

I want to introduce those crazies to my thoroughbred who would beg to differ about the whole “running free” aspect of life. He quite likes his stall and has mild freakouts about wild animals in the pasture and bugs. He HATES bugs. And as much as I hate to admit it. I am not the only one who can ride him to glory. In fact, there are plenty of other riders out there who can ride him better than me, though none that I can think of are deeply affected teenagers. LOL!
