Tryon International Equestrian Center, The New Standard...

Cabins are good sized with big kitchen/great room/dining areas. Have porches with grills. High end appliances including front load washers and dryers that come stocked with laundry soap. You can’t beat the convenience since they are 30 seconds from the barn areas. I was very impressed last fall. The group I was visiting had 6 people staying in the cabins and they were very comfortable.

Seems like they are holding an informational session March 5th:
“An informational session about the upcoming Spring/Summer/Fall seasons at Tryon International Equestrian Center (TIEC) will be held on Thursday March 5, 2015, at 3 pm in The Wellington Club at PBIEC. Equestrian Sport Productions CEO, Mark Bellissimo, will be available to take questions about the new equestrian center located in the rolling hills of Tryon, NC, and provide information about the amenities TIEC has to offer riders, trainers, and spectators. Bellissimo will discuss lodging availability, local activities, and specific competition dates as well as the full-season calendar.”

Kind of last second notice but I’m interested to hear what comes out of this.

Just wondering if anyone attended the informational meeting SimonandGus mentioned.

Would love to see a prize list for the show dates they are advertising in April… Not all of us who would like to participate are at WEF…

Do you really think it would draw that many people away from WEF? 79* in Wellington today, 35* at Asheville airport… I also saw one of the sample cabins on the grounds at WEF. While it looks very cute and cozy, after a week or two cozy might become cramped.[/QUOTE]

As someone already mentioned, the Tryon shows aren’t going to draw anything from WEF as they don’t run at the same time. The cabin on the grounds at WEF is not the cabin the others are talking about… Small mobile cabins like the one at WEF will be available for rent and will be parked in the campground. The big cabins are permanent structures and quite large.

There’s no tentative time schedule on those prize lists…it’s in 3 weeks. Helps if exhibitors know what days their classes are projected to be on before they can decide to go or not.

Surprised they didn’t plan the informational meeting earlier in the WEF season for more exposure. Many have wrapped it up and and moved back home in the last couple of weeks.

The class schedule starts on page 5 of the prizelist that was linked.

Thank you!!! They must have just posted!

So how is Tryon in 2016? Has the footing improved? Still haven’t made it there…just hasn’t been on barn’s schedule.

I was just there. I absolutely adore the showgrounds, so much that I changed my show schedule to go back again
I have been to both wellington and tryon, and prefer tryon. The showgrounds are well set up for riders and spectators. On the spectator side, there are places to sit between each ring that are covered so you can watch rounds in the shade. The vendors are set up close to all the rings and there is ample seating in the George Morris arena. Unlike Wellington, there are multiple ways to get to the seating of the George Morris arena. Also, unlike Wellington where a lot of the rings are hard to get to and you have to pretty much walk in the horse lanes to get there on foot, all the rings are easy to get to by raised pathways at Tryon. My only complaints are the place is still under construction (The covered arena is not done, there were diggers driving around working on the hillside), there is not a lot of parking, and there are not as many vendors as in wellington. I am sure these things will change with time though.
On the rider side, the barns are very close to the arenas (like right across from them), the arenas have large covered areas for the horses to stand out of the shade by fans while waiting for their rounds, and the barns are well set up.
I am unsure about the footing. It seemed fine to me, but i train on grass and sand arenas so maybe my horses are just used to harder surfaces.
It seems like they took all the good things from Wellington and made it even better. It isn’t the best showgrounds i have ever been to, but it is on track to be.

Another vote for “loved”. Can’t wait to go back. Other than the ongoing construction, my only complaint was lack of areas for hand-walking and grazing. There are 2 grass areas at then ends of the ring 1-4 row, but they are planted in some type of Bermuda grass that isn’t very tasty. Pretty to look at, and I’m sure will hold up to traffic…but I sure missed the grass like they had at Bruce’s Field on the track! But the rest of it was awesome. And I absolutely love ShowGroundsLive.

Raine, I have heard about the lack of grass for grazing but it’s hard to hand walk too?

It doesn’t sound like a place you would want to spend more than a week or two. I believe horses need to graze and they definitely need to hand walk.

I think the plan is eventually those will be turnouts. I was also told through the grapevine there will be more turnouts put in by where the covered arena is now… they certainly have the acreage for it.

I’ve been there twice, once in October and once just a few weeks ago, merely as a spectator. I was traveling through to another destination and had to stop both times. I love it there. It’s been years since I’ve been to Wellington, but I really like Tryon. It has a great layout. And last time we were there my DH bought a pair of Tucci boots. The sales person was very helpful. Shameless plug.

Not really hard to hand walk…more just nowhere to go except around on the same paths as everyone is using to go to/from the rings. I was a naughty one, though. We actually spotted grass outside the “horse area” along the front of the parking lot near Tack 2. We went there every day to graze. I kept waiting to be yelled at, but happily it didn’t happen! We just had to be careful not to kick any cars…and there was lots of construction work on the hillside that got my mare a bit nervous. But she worked through it for the yummy grass!

I have heard they plan hacking paths…that will be nice.
