TTouch Body Wrap for Stable Stress or other solutions?

Has anyone used TTouch body wrapping for a horse that stresses out when stabled?

My mare has always been stressy when transitioned from Summer to Autumn to Winter routine. In the past the routine was Winter; indoors with an hour’s turn-out in a sand pen, spring and autumn; day time turn out and stabled at night, summer; 24 hours turn-out. There were usually 1-2 weeks on stress during the transition period after which she would settle down. Due to circumstances beyond my control I had to move barns, everything was going well whilst she was in a routine over winter but the problems started in April when the current yard went to 24 hours turn-out. On the old yard she was in a 6+ mare herd where there was at least 2 out at all times, now she’s in a group of 4. Initially she was on 24 hour turn-out but due to weight issues the other owners are now bringing in their horses during the day and only turning out over night and since she won’t stay out on her own she also has to come in.

She’s now being a total stress-head during the day and I’m at my wits end trying to figure out what I need to do to calm her down. I’ve got her on magnesium and Agnus Castus both of which have helped but not enough. I’ve got a stable mirror on order and hopefully that will be here by the end of the week. I’ve been doing research and have come across the body wrap information, hence the question. Any advice is appreciated.

If I can’t find a solution then I’ll try and sell her to a home which can give her the routine she obviously needs. At the moment I’m loathe to do that because she is very good under saddle and with the amount of work I’ve put into her training I really don’t want to have to restart with a new horse.

She’s a Sandro (s)Hit granddaughter - I should have anticipated problems like this!!

Does she have plenty of good hay in her stall, a friend beside her she can see? Could you find someone else to leave their horse out with yours for 24/7 turnout.? I’ve used the TTouch and love it, but don’t think it will provide the results you are looking for.

you could try a mirror

TTouch Practitioner 2 here. While the wraps are VERY effective in many cases, I wouldn’t leave one on a horse unattended. The head wrap or “thinking cap” I have had excellent results in calming horses down when working with them. The regular figure 8 wrap is also very helpful in many cases but I really wouldn’t leave it on in the stable unless you are there or someone can check and make sure it does not slip.

It was from these wraps, which are also used on dogs and other animals, that the “Thundershirt” was born. They work on the idea that pressure calms nerve endings and calms the animal and even the person. Temple Grandin has written about how pressure helps calm autistic people.

Aside from the wraps, TTouch body work is very effective in getting horses to let go of tension and to break up habitual patterns of tension. Teaching her to lower her head and to ask her to keep it low whenever you are around her can help change the habit of tension. I have several articles on my website you might be interested in. Stroking the body with the TTouch wand (stiff white dressage whip" is also very effective at calming a horse. Many times I have practically put horses to sleep by stroking them, much to the shock of their owners! I think you have many options to try with this horse!

I have also used Zylkene. I used it on a horse on stall rest and quiet walking under saddle to rehab a suspensory injury. It helped ENORMOUSLY! https://www.valleyvet.com/ct_detail.html?pgguid=cf50f260-a6da-40cd-9117-64191719ff79

I hope this helps!
