Tuckahoe State Park/Equestrian Center

Is anyone familiar with Tuckahoe SP in Maryland? I am wondering if they have horse camping facilites or if it is a day use only park.

Thanks

I can’t tell you anything about Tuckahoe SP but if you’re looking for a place to do some horse camping I can tell you that Cedarville State Forest now has a horse camp ground. It is on the southern edge of Prince Georges County Maryland. I also know a couple of other places that you can horse camp in Central PA, withing PA State Forests. They aren’t established campgrounds, just primitive camping, but excellent trails. Many state forests allow camping as long as you get a permint from them.

Thanks for the info, I will look in to Ceaderville and the PA parks. Just looking to expand my horizons this summer.

I’d be really interested in some of the primitive ones in PA- Can you tell me some of the places?

I would love to know too! A few people at my barn are looking for somewhere to go for maybe “2” weekend nights. We are in north of Baltimore and wanted to go somewhere within approximately 2 hours or so. Far enough for something different but close enough for a weekend trip.

Tuckahoe has a website. I had it bookmarked at one time. Let me see if I can find it…

Found it it is www.tuckahoeequestriancenter.net

OK, first Green Lane Park, http://www2.montcopa.org/parks/cwp/view,A,1516,Q,26377,parksNav,|.asp has an actual horse camp ground and I believe there are some type of stall or pens for horses.

You can camp in Michaux State Forest, most people camp at this one really big parking lot in the southern half of the forest at the intersection of cold Spring Road and Teaberry Rd. No water, no Johns, miles and miles of trails, shoes recommended. Call the forest headquarters, http://www.dcnr.state.pa.us/forestry/stateforests/michaux.aspx.

Weiser State Forest just NE of Harrisburg has lovely trails and a good map.
http://www.dcnr.state.pa.us/forestry/stateforests/weiser.aspx . There is a large lot right next to Haldeman Field Headquarters. this is the section of Weiser that is just south of Elizabethville The trails there are gorgeous, some are snowmoble trails that make for really nice riding. You are allowed to use the route east that passes thru an adjacent State Gamelands to reach another section of Weiser. There are nice creeks up there but again, this is primitive camping although there are a couple of picnic grounds that do have bathrooms.

I think that most of the PA state forests (probably most states) allow for primitive horse camping, you just need to call the specific forest’s hdqtr and ask. Many of them will mail you your permit ahead of time and will include trail maps. Most state forests don’t have fees, state parks do.

If you click on the map link for each forest you will go to a map page and there seems to always be a link to another adobe pdf version of the map. Open that version and you can zoom in on sections of the maps.

I’m trying to plan a camping trip to Weiser on the Memorial Day weekend. Horse camping, trail riding, wine drinking, etc.

Thank you- these are really helpful!

You have a PM

Tuckahoe has dry camping I believe. I don’t especially care for the trails at Tuckahoe. If you are looking for somewhere to camp and ride near Baltimore there is no where better than Fair Hill, it’s God’s country:-)) 5000 acres, just off I 95 at Elkton, lots of well marked trails, hills, streams, rivers, tunnels bridges, woods, big sweeping grassland. You can make it as easy and as difficult as you want. I am lucky enough to ride there regularly and I never tire of it.

Other places that are very nice within 2 hrs of Baltimore are Lums Pond DE which is south of Glasgow and North of Middletown just off Route 896 which is off I 95 Exit 1 in DE. Patapscoe State Park, off I 95 somewhere near Aberdeen, never been there but I hear it’s very nice.

Wye Island is wonderful also, it’s near Kent Island which is just the other side of the Bay Bridge, Lot’s of acreage to ride and I believe you can dry camp.

Tuckahoe State Park

Hey… Tuckahoe State Park and the Tuckahoe Equestrian Center is great!

In order to park at the Equestrian center rather than the Park campgrounds, you must be a member of the club but if you go at least once per year you will reap the benefits of being a club member. Check out the details at
http://tuckahoeequestriancenter.net

Trails: most are well marked and they cross the river in a few places.

send me a pm and I’ll put you in touch with some very knowledgeable folks.

I take my dogs there all the time–it’s absolutely beautiful. They also hold a paperchase there.
