Tuff Shed and others

I will be getting a new tack shed this summer. Lots of choices from local contractors to the big box stores. Apparently now Tuff Shed is selling sheds through one of the big box stores, as well as through a local distributor.

Any recommendations? Quality, must-have upgrades, customer service/installation ordering from the big box stores? DIY installation or pay for installation? Many of the online kits don’t come with floor, paint, or roofing - is it really going to be cost effective to add all that on?

I am looking for something less than 100 sq ft (so it won’t require a permit). I am looking at both standard style and barn style so I can have a loft area for blankets, etc. but the barn style is quite a bit more. I definitely will want to include at least one window or skylight, and a turbine vent on the roof.

If you have pictures - inside or out, I would love to see them!

Oh gosh, I loved my TuffShed. Have them do everything – they are so quick and good about it. I had an 8x8 with a window and turbine on top. I could store 25 100lb bales of hay in it and have a couple of feet empty in front to stand inside and move around.

The quality is excellent. If I could have one now it would be there in a heartbeat regardless of price. I see that HD is offering them and I suspect it is the same price as TuffShed direct. Might be worth asking if Tuffshed folks do the installation vs HD.

an 8x8 can be lifted and moved, anything bigger is probably permanent.

@BlueDrifter What do you use for flooring? I always need more space, so this might be a good option. Thanks in advance!

It is built on a raised metal frame (you might need to put mesh around to stop rabbits from hiding underneath). I didn’t do anything for the floor, it was a nice wood floor. I stored hay directly on it without a problem. The door seals tight - no mice could squeeze in – although I once got a bale with mice already inhabiting it, and they couldn’t get out.

I used 4x4’s cut to 8 foot lengths and placed next to each other to be my “porch”. Since the area was leveled for the TuffShed, it was level enough that I didn’t need to do anything to secure or grout the 4x4’s – dirt filled in the cracks.

Ventilation was key for me since I was going to put hay inside, so I am glad I got the turbine. Others didn’t and their sheds were definitely hotter.

We found someone on CL who had worked for Tuff Shed and basically did the same sheds, for less. We use ours for storing our power equipment. It went up quickly, and included plywood flooring, roof decking and asphalt shingles, gable vents, etc. We stained it to match our home.

It’s been several years, so far, and it’s held up fine.
