My horse has a shoe boil which won’t go away, so I was going to try a shoe boil boot, but he lives out 24/7 (and is barefoot). I can stall him (and will tonight), but I wanted to hear from others as to whether they stall or turn out with the shoe boil boots (and if they do turn out, have there been any issues with the boot?). Thanks!
There’s a smaller version of the shoe boil boot…it looks like a rubbery doughnut. I would think its a bit safer than the full size one. I had the full size shoe boil gizmo but my horse wasn’t turned out with it. We eventually got rid of the capped elbow - this is what you are experiencing? - using massage and an essential oil. Two rounds of cortisone didn’t make any difference.
The fetlock ring? I’ve seen that and wondered it if would be big enough to stop contact between the heel and elbow. What oil did you use?
Idaho balsam fir, because it has cortisone-like properties. Young Living brand which is pricey but is therapeutic grade (meaning the molecular size is supposed to be small enough to get in the tissue). The massage technique I used was more of a “jiggle” than stroking. It worked for us, though!
Thanks, zbgirl. This boil is not going away, and there is so much swelling around it. The shoe boil boot caused swelling over the hoof (after wearing it just for 2 nights with a night off in between) so I can’t use that now. The vet gave me a steroid cream to put on every other day. I’m going to look up the stuff you used. Thanks!
The fetlock ring thingy can get stepped on if they screw around. I don’t like turning out in larger areas with buddies wearing any accessories, if it can slip, flip, trip them come off and be forever lost? Sooner or later it will. Smaller areas alone not as destructive to boots, wraps etc. and such.
shoe boils are unsightly but rarely create real problems.
Findeight, the boil and the whole area around it is bothering my horse. The vet is wondering if he pulled his tricep muscle or something. He ultrasounded and saw a hematoma next to the boil. I don’t know what’s going on in there. My other horse would get shoe boils off and on, but there was never any other swelling or issues. This one is a mystery, though. His tricep muscle seems “loose” and you can grab it, whereas the tricep muscle on the other side is up tight, and you can’t grab it. I’m having a second opinion tomorrow.
