Just bought a new to me Kensington Supermesh TO Blanket ,it is heavy duty and looks like brand new,was told still waterproof.after the last snowfall it got warm enough to take it off,i hung it up in the barn ,fully length and fully open but when it got colder and i wanted to use it again,it felt damp to the touch on the inside.brought it into heated basement and it showed some wet spots pretty quickly in the inside lining.question : is this a sign it wasn’t waterproof - it seemed i could brush the snow off from he outside completely and the snow was the “dry” type anyway.or is this “inside dampness” a residue from horse’s body sweat ,my stable blankets tend to feel damp when taken off as well.
Tough to say from what you’ve written. If you routinely find your horses damp and warm under their stable blankets, though, and they have no access to the outside when they’re wearing them, it does sound like you might be over blanketing for the temps and horses are sweating.
i think that would be quite unlikely,i’m in canada and we have temps of minus 25 celcius on a regular basis ,and horses are turned out most of the day.i am also just guessing if that dampness comes from the horse’s body …it could be something else instead
^ not necessarily. If it’s heavy weight and your horses aren’t clipped then it could still be too warm for your horse even at -25. You don’t say what weight it is, just that it’s heavy duty
Or your horse is clipped and runs warm and doesn’t need a heavy weight like the horse next door. They’re individuals and need to be clothed as such.
Or it’s not breathable and that’s trapping moisture inside the blanket and it’s always going to sweat. You didn’t ask why the seller was selling it?
Dampness can easily be from the body moisture escaping the horse, even if they aren’t too warm, and not getting sifted out through the blanket material. They wouldn’t necessarily be too warm, but that is why a blanket, stable or turnout, needs to be very breathable. Otherwise all that moisture collects against the horse and they can get cold, fast.
There may well be some waterproofing agents that don’t allow the fabric to breathe. That wouldn’t be something Kensington would come with, but could have been applied after the fact.
Or, it really can be the horses are sweating, yes even in CN conditions and the breathability isn’t able to keep up with the amount of moisture generated.
In my experience, I can take off a turnout blanket that is damp on the outside and feels fully dry on the inside, horse is cozy and dry. I can hang that blanket for two hours, and when I return the inside feels damp. Put it on the horse and it dries up again as it warms.
I think something is going on with the breathable membrane such that when the blanket is on the warm horse, it works but hung up with cold air on both sides, and the membrane condenses on both sides or something.
I wear a lot of Goretext type rain gear myself. If I wear a Goretext jacket on a dry day, I become almost as damp underneath as on a wet day! Plus even Goretext fails after a couple of hours in full torrential rain.
yes, scribbler - that is exactly it .when i feel under the blanket,it feels completely dry ,and so does the horse .i am pretty good at using the right weight for the right horse at the appropiate temps ,my TB needs more warmth than my fuzzy woolly mammoth trakehner ,very true .the kensington is supposedly high tech, breathable and will adjust to various temperatures although i am skeptical about that and only use it when it is REALLY cold with wind chill.
i was HOPING that cool dampness i feel after blankets were hanging in barn for sometimes would dry up once put on horse but not sure.

this is the blanket.it can it be be that the waterproofness is not working anymore for some of the snow having melted through to cause wetness is some spots in the inner lining ?the interior also felt stiff as a board in places .so this is different from the dampness i feel in some blankets, hung up in barn .guess i had two questions LOL
