I have the horseware Amigo 100gm and it’s my favorite blanket. It’ll be going into year 3 this year and hasn’t needed any repairs or re-waterproofing.
You can buy a rambo unfilled blanket that has liners you can buy. The liners come in 100gm, 200gm, and 400gm. Just make sure you get the turnout blanket that has the attachments for the liners. There are several types that fit that description. Then you have the light, unfilled blanket to use on mild days, and the 100gm liner for cooler days. Make sure you get a turnout that has a detachable unfilled neck rug that you can also buy liners for.
Bumping this up to see if anyone has found any 80-100 gram turnouts. I know about the Rambo, and the Amigo, is there anything else out there?
There are quite a few suggestions in this thread–Dover, SSTack, Saxon, Smartpak. Have you checked out all those?
I went with the Rambo and don’t regret it one bit.
A couple of years ago Dover had their Northwinds on wicked sale. I picked up the medium and heavy blankets with neck covers for about $350 total. They are still going strong.
I have a couple by Weatherbeeta - bought one at Equine Affair more than a decade ago for $50. It’s still in perfect condition - waterproofness is gone but only because I wash it yearly in hot water with detergent (I do that with any blanket that serves as a base layer). I just layer a t/o sheet over it if rain is expected. I have another one i bought last year for under $100 - haven’t needed to use it yet since the other one is just fine!
They’re out there - just hard to find. The 100gm is probably my favorite blanket as it gets used the most.
Personally not a fan of Rambo due to a ton of mine leaking - their layering system seems like a good idea until you’re out there in the dark switching out liners and dealing with all the Velcro pieces. No thanks.
I have the Shires 100g blanket that I got from state line tack. TBH the outer layer doesn’t breath very well and my horse gets sweatier in it then she does her 200g. It’s also waterproof but breaths better.
Totally off topic it a long time ago, 20 years or so, Saratoga sold a layered turnout system. It had a thinsulate waterproof sheet, fleece liner and microfiber liner. I wish they still sold them it was the best.
I have two of the Weatherbeeta Comfitec TrioTrio and use the 100 gram outer quite a bit. Got them on steep discount last summer.
I was just able to find this Blanket online at a great price, so I went ahead and bought it. I expect to make good use of the 100 gram shell, especially with our changing weather here. Snow due tonite, then a bit warmer, then getting more cold and wet.
Thanks for all the suggestions and reviews. I do remember the set of layers that Saratoga used to sell. I remember hoping that some day I could have a nice coordinated set. Now I’m just happy if I get some layer in any version of blue and/or grey. Practicality trumps matchy-matchy.
I continue to love my Rambos with 100g filling - that is what my horses wear most of the winter here as they just don’t need more in our climate unless I clip. But I also picked up an Amigo 100g and it worked well for my haflinger, but I don’t know how it will hold up over the long run since it is still fairly new. One of my youngsters got a Smartpak Deluxe in the 100g and I was happy with that one too, but he only wore it a short time before I sold him, so again, not sure how it will hold up over time. I was happy with the fit (same size as he wore in Rambo) and the price at the time was really low ($75 super sale if I remember right) so can’t beat that.
I just bought a very lightly used 100g Rambo and I’m super excited. It cost me less than half the original price. I’ve been stalking around for a 75 for a while.
I do have the 100g Amigo and it lasted fine last season but the horse was primarily alone.
Rambo does sell a set with turnout, liner, and neck cover…maybe the Duo?
Hope you like it. I have yet to use the liner, but I do use the neck cover. I like that it gives me an option for something close to a heavy in the rare occasion that we need it, without buying a whole 'nother blanket.
Yes! The Rambo Duo is awesome. Love the 100 gm turnout for my pasture boarded guy.
I do love Rhinos too. They are my favorite along with Rambos. They just fit so good- no rubs ever.
I totally miss Net Equestrian too and their amazing closeout prices. Will never find that again. Lol
I got a Rhino medium with standard neck and use that for a stable blanket. It is toasty and beaches, and doesn’t get ask nasty or damp like a “regular” stable Blanket. Bonus is that I can add a neck cover when horse is clipped.
I, too, got some great deals and steals from NetEquestrian. I recently looked at the site and it has very, very few items even listed.
I have a Big D 100g Sussex lite turnout that I bought last year during Riding Warehouse’s Thanksgiving sale. I think it is better-made than an Amigo I used to have. Fits reasonably well. My horse is built wide and stout with medium-sized withers.
I have a shires 100g that I use a lot, and a Horze one that has fleece insulation that I get a ton of use out of.
When I bought 100g blankets I was slightly skeptical. I was actually impressed and get a ton of use out of them. I love the 100g blankets especially for days/nights that are in between sheet/mid weight blankets.
I have the Rambo 100g. Its going 8 years strong. I water proof it every year and it looks almost new still. I bought the Amigo 100g last year and I like that one too. I have an older Kensington 100g that was sold through State Line Tack. Its held up and its worked. It came with a horse I bought a few years ago.
Id probably going to buy either the Amigo or the Rambo from now on. I like SStack blankets, but for the price Id rather have Amigo. The price difference isnt much different honestly.
I have a 200g Rhino plus turnout (the one with the neck) and I really like it! I had a Rambo Optimo before this one and I definitely like the Rhino better and it has held up better than my Rambo too. My horse destroyed his Rambo in 1.5 winters, whereas he had his Rhino for 3 seasons and the only thing he did to it is rip the velcro off the hood, which was super easy to sew back on.
I have the smartpak one…it held up well for the last two years
