Turnout blankets with 100 g of fill

I am KICKING myself for not taking advantage of the Netequestrian sale on blankets in the spring! I didn’t realize Seven’s 100 g turnout was torn until a couple weeks later. I was being “good” and now I’m kind of stuck!

I’d loooove to have one of these but they’re $300 bucks elsewhere and OUCH. (Seven’s an 81…just how large would that 87 be on her?)

I’ve seen that there’s a Rhino wug with 100g…any feedback there? I’ve never had a Rhino, only Rambos. How’s the quality, and the fit?

I’ve also found this one from Dover. Feedback?

Anything else out there with 100 grams of fill? It’s a weird weight, but has been SO handy.

Schneiders has 80gm fill “sheets” - will that work? They’re really handy!

I had a Norhtwind a few years back and it held up well.
Saxon makes a turnout with 150 gram fill but they are not the most rugged of blankets. I had one for my welsh pony and got two years out of it. I am going to get him another as the weight was perfect for him.

SmartPak has one. I got it last year and it held up really well through some nasty wet weather and stayed dry underneath. It doesn’t get cold enough where I am to warrant much more fill, but I do clip, otherwise my horse gets too hot when working so he needs something at night. For us it was perfect, and only $149.

Plus it looks like this is eligible for 10% off (17LaborDay is the code) - not sure how much longer that will run

I’ve used Dover’s brand of blankets for many years, with no issues. But my two boys have been notably easy on their blankets.

Dover has a less expensive line, similar to NorthWind, that just isn’t the two-tone color, might be a lower denier, that is what I tend to buy now. I have NorthWinds from my first horse, saved in a tupperware for a potential next horse (can’t go wrong with 78s, right?), they held up well. They do have piping on them, which my boy inevitable rubbed through and so they look more worn than they are. The “lower” line is simpler, but those blankets look brand new when they come out of the wash, no frills to them (except the snaps on the fronts, which I love).

I don’t have the Dover NorthWind, but I have the Dover Rider’s International Supreme Turnout Blanket in a 100 gram (like this one, but 100 gram instead of 200 gram http://www.doversaddlery.com/rider%2…et/p/X1-24997/ ) and it’s an excellent blanket. It would appear that they no longer make the exact one I have, only the one you linked.

I also really like a 100 gram blanket - that is mostly what my Arab mare wears throughout the winter. A 200 or 220 is too heavy, while a sheet isn’t enough. I wish more places carried 100 gram blankets.

SmartPak also carries a 100 gram turnout. They call it “medium/lite” I have this one as well. https://www.smartpakequine.com/pt/sm…t-blanket-7376

ETA; haha I see others were basically posting the same thing at the same time! Great minds!

I’ve had good luck with the Saxon’s. I think they have both a 100g and a150g. Mine are the 150g but I feel like they are really more like a 100. Not sure how they would fit a larger horse as my guy takes their 72.

Rambo’s can use liner’s, so I have a Rambo turnout sheet, a100gram liner and a 200gram liner.

I bought the Rambo 100 gram turnout that the OP links to. It’s great. I’m not at all sorry I bought it. (I know that’s no help at all, but I just wanted to chime in).

For the Amigo (vs the Rhino Wug), you can use Rambo liners and Amigo or Rambo hoods.

I’ve also had good luck with the Saxons. A 87 is HUGE-- we had an 18.2 WB boarder for a while and that’s what he wore. It was a tent for my 16.1 TB.

My 17h Percheron wore either an 87 Euro (wide) cut blanket, or a Big Fella 86. They are way bigger than an 81.

Can you just get one of the Rambo 100g liners? I have a Rhino mid weight that I like just fine, plenty durable in group turnout for several winters. I like the Rambos better, and because of the Net Equestrian sale last fall, my guy has everything rambo and his Rhino sheet and wug mid weight as back ups.

I have a Saxon 150g 1200 D standard and it has been great for 3 years. It was super cheap. The drop is a bit short but if you’re looking at a 100 or 150g I don’t think that’s too much of an issue. My other is an Amigo Wug sheet and on really cold nights the barn just puts the sheet on top of the saxon and it has worked well.

Love the Rambos. I have the 100gm plus a 100gm liner. More than enough for Texas. Well worth the $$$. Mine is in perfect shape and it’s 7 yrs old. I do not think the Amigos are worth anything - do not hang as well and are not near as waterproof. I also really like the Dover Northwinds. In using liners, make sure the blanket and liner work together because if you do not attach them at back and front the horse can get the liner off and destroy it. Ask me how I know!!

For one horse he already had a Rambo sheet and mid-weight, so I bought a 100g liner. That gave me the ability to turn his sheet into a 100g or his 200g into 300g (heavy weight, basically).

For the other horse, I picked up a 100g Amigo for a good price on netequestrian. I am hoping he the Amigo will hold up.

My horses are in Rhinos. One has a Rhino light Wug that has come through five seasons and looks like it might go a sixth. It has two patches where he caught it on something and tore it. Do note that the Rhino Wug is much smaller than the same sized Rambo. Mine has his 78 Rhino light and a 75 Rambo medium Wug. The fit is identical. I only have the Rambo because I found it barely used for less than a new Rhino.

My other horse has a Rhino Original light because he can roll through bonded waterproofing in less than six months. He has the original because I want to put neck rugs on instead of heavier blankets.

My Rambo has been through the mill with my guy. His pasture mate and him are really hard on blankets (like ripping the tail flap off or grabbing each other and pulling hard). He also has a Weatherbeeta that’s held up to the abuse really well. I just bought new 1200D Weatherbeeta blankets for the mare. I love Rambo but they are really pricey. I found a Saxon 1200D sheet on sale cheap at Stateline Tack so this will be my first Saxon product.

I’m so glad to hear you say that, because I bit the bullet and bought it  Found a reasonable (ish) price.

Thank you all for the recommendations! I looked around and just didn’t see anything that I liked as much as the Rambo, so decided to just go for it. I know it’ll hold up well for years and years!

I love my Rambo 100 weight turnouts. They are perfect for those I need more than a sheet days. They have held up very well.
