Turnouts (sheet/blanket) for a Dutch Harness Horse

Does anyone have any recommendations for turnout sheets and blankets for a Dutch Harness Horse? He’s very uphill with a big neck, typical of the breed. I see the Fryskware blankets designed for baroque horses (Friesians mostly) that would probably be good, but they are in the Netherlands. I’d prefer to order from the US.

I don’t have any confo shots, but this is him:

Schneider’s cutbacks are wonderful for the high headed horse and they have a ton of options now. Plus right now is their big sale.

Schneider’s makes a “cut back” option for higher necked horses. They also offer a few different fits for the wither/neck area in general.

Thanks!

Bow Horse blankets fit the uphill horses really well.

I have a love/hate relationship with Schneider. The blankets are never waterproof. I must have a string of bad luck with them.

Honestly, I’ve had a few issues with their blankets as well, but I know so many people love them. I will also check out Bow. I haven’t heard of them. Thanks.

Well, darn. They don’t have whay I need size wise at Bow. Does anyone else sell them other than having to purchase direct feom Bow?

Schneiders fits one of my horses (94") and they used to have one that fit the big boy with some extensions (anyone know of a 102" sheet?). Neither of them came waterproofed, but they fit! So I’ve put up with the waterproofing issues. What I have found is that Star Brite Tent Waterproofing spray is your friend. You can take a completely unwaterproofed sheet and turn it waterproof. It looks like an application will last the winter.
I really like their sheets and the Star Brite is useful for any sheet that has been heavily used and washed.

I’ve had good luck w Rambo’s fitting a DHH.

You can only purchase direct. Try Rambo blankets instead.

I actually use the high necks on my upheaded horses because I find that the cutbacks tend to bind at the withers. That may be because they have enormous shoulders :joy: But I find the high neck takes the pressure off the withers and doesn’t seem to impede their upheadedness. I use schneider’s and have never had an issue with their waterproofing other than the sheets. But my blankets are all waterproof.

See, I’ve had the opposite experience with high necks. On my PRE’s the high necks are too tight on the neck, shoulder, and withers. It does limit their upheadedness. Everything is just too tight and there is pressure when they raise their heads. With a low/level head, it’s not as bad, but I was actually concerned that it’d cause soreness over time. Maybe for a more slender upheaded type it would work. PRE’s can be built uphill, but also can be chunky though.

I’ve had no issue with the Rambo Optimo or Rambo with leg arches regular style. Those fit well and are waterproof.

Fitting blankets just shouldn’t be this hard!!!

Mine are more slender, so maybe that’s it. I’ve got saddlebreds and though mine are not upheaded by saddlebred standards they are upheaded compared to everything else I own.

Bottom line is that it’s very difficult to pick blankets!

It really is!

I’ve had two from the same brand and allegedly the same “model” fit differently!

The Rambo Optimos are great for high headed breeds. A friend of mine uses them for all of her Friesians and will not use any other brand.

Thanks, all. This is definitely a task! I do like my Amigos, so I bet the Optimos are nice. I’ll look into them as well. I just looked at one of my blankets that I replaced because of it shifting on my horse (different horse). It’s a Schneider’s, so I’m a bit leery on those. The blanket is in great shape, yet seems to shift on the horse in back.
