TVG Haskell

Talk about almost caught napping.

Mike Smith on Authentic settles down at the top of the stretch with a hand ride until about 1/16 to go when Mike realized that NY Traffic was about to run them down.

Talk about a change in riding style

Authentic won the nose bob but a really, IMO, nice stretch run by NY Traffic. Dr. Post just didn’t show up.

Did Mike Smith almost blow the race? Or did Authentic suddenly get very tired?

What Mike said in the post race interview was that Authentic was still very inconsistent down the backstretch, not focused, ducking in and out so that Mike almost lost an iron. Then down the lane lost focus and started wandering so Mike left him alone.

It sounded good and yes, I could see some ‘wandering’ but also wondering if Mike was working on why he might have almost lost.

Said Authentic did gallop out strong and wasn’t tired.

I’d like to be the fly on the wall for that Baffert/Smith post-race phone call…

My local newspaper reported that Dr Post WON the Haskell. I sent an email to the paper correcting them. What poor reporting.

Whoops

Wonder what Haskell they were thinking of that Dr Post won - he didn’t even hit the board

And even worse they said Authentic finished a “disappointing third” denying Baffert a record ninth win. Just the opposite of what happened. How do they print so many mistakes?

How very odd. You’d think they wouldn’t bother covering the race at all, if they didn’t want to take the time to look up the results.

Newsday is just the worst when it comes to sports reporting. During last year’s World Series, heading into game 7, they listed the results of the first six games as being at four wins for one team and two wins for the other. Even someone like me who knows almost nothing about baseball understands that if a team had already won four games the series would already be over and wouldn’t require a seventh game.

That goes way beyond simple incompetence. Maybe they’re doing it on purpose–just to see if people are paying attention?

I would think they would have more pride in their work. I just hope no one is placing their bets based on Newsday’s reporting.

I can relate. In 2015 my crappy local paper ran an article the day after Pharoah’s TC win containing the comment that the first TC winner was Aristides. It was not the first time I questioned why I bothered subscribing to that poor excuse for journalism, but it was the last.

my newspaper years ago had the headline “Codex win the Belmont”. He came in 7th…(Genuine Risk was robbed)

Has anyone local given them a call and asked why they’ve got it so wrong?

It’s so incompetent that it’s fascinating.
