Twins with the Maiden Mare

Recently bred my maiden mare, did the P&E protocol to time her cycle as we bred AI, everything went according to plan but the mare conceived with twins. Vet came out on four separate occasions - day 14, day 15, day 17 and day 22.

Pinched on days 14, 15 and 17. Come day 22 still had two and vet said only option was to terminate. I normally trust my vet full heartedly but after doing some research it seems odd to still have twins after pinching on three separate occasions and catching them on day 14, I was expecting to have lost both - not still have both.

Has anyone else had a similar experience with twins? Looking to re-breed the mare next season but am seriously considering finding a bette repro vet for that season to avoid wasting more time and money.

I had a mare that had twins but vet said I caught “too late” at 15 days. We waited and one attached to uterus and other did not, so died off when it was starved from nutrition. I can’t recall, but maybe we waited to 30 days? Mare foaled one foal this spring (though she was so big at one point I was afraid maybe I did have twins!)

I have had twins pinched several times, and either lost the entire pregnancy or had a remaining twin, and fortunately, usually there was a remaining singleton pregnancy. Once I tried to have a pregnancy reduced by letting it go until about 90 days and reducing by a heart stick, but when that didn’t work, I lost the year. I definitely didn’t have multiple attempts at pinching.

I would find a better repro vet.
