Twisted shoe

Hi, so my horse twisted one of his hind shoes in his stable. Not lame and i did not pull it off because i could not as the shoe was not enough loose and there are no clefts so was not worried about them stucking in the sole.It is slightly twisted. I Can only go back AT the barn in a couple of days and farrier IS on hollyday so Do not know what to do. Try to pull it off? And if you pull it off would you still work lightly thé horse until farrier Can Come back which it will probably not bé possible before 10 or 15 days. Thank you

I would pull it. Does anyone at the barn have some tools? With a hind shoe you might be able to do some flatting while the farrier is away, but depends on the horse. I wouldn’t do it with a lost front shoe.

If you pick up nail nippers and pull offs at tractor supply or farrier supply you should be able to loosen the nails and pull it off. Always pull down. I was told never to pull to the outside or you can damage the wall.

If this isn’t possible see if another farrier could come pull and fox shoe for you ?? Not sure what options you have.

I’d pull the shoe. Loosen/raise the clinches if they’re
tight. Then get a crease nail puller and grab each nail and pull down and away from the shoe.

Your horse is a reiner, yes? Are these slide plates? If it’s only slightly twisted I might be tempted to leave it on. If it’s worse than barely/
slightly I’d pull it. Use pullers to lift the shoe off the foot, then smack it back down to expose the nail heads.

In either case NO spins and NO stops until shoes can be reset. Zero. None.

Great idea. Every horse owner should have these items on hand. I would definitely pull the shoe.

I went this morning, had thé tools but impossible to take it off, thé shoe IS loose on one side but could not take it off. So i tried to put it back and taped thé shoe AT his place it IS thé only thing i manager to do😢

Next time your farrier is out, ask if you can pull the shoes for practice while your farrier guides you on how to do it.

I’d guess you weren’t in a good “farrier stance” where you can get leverage on the foot without the fetlock flexing. It takes a lot of strength to get and stay in that position.

Yes, i really tried but impossible for me so i taped because i really could not do anything else. I am not going to ride the horse for sure but not sure if it IS good for him to stay for some days like that

Not ideal, but he will be fine.

@sara78, don’t beat yourself up because you could not pull the shoe. I would guess there are far more people who do not have that skillset than are going to admit it here.

Is there anyone else at the barn that could look at this for you?

Is there another farrier covering for yours while yours is on vacation?

If you can not pull the shoe it might be worth protecting the loose shoe with a duct tape booth or such.

Yes i protected thé foot and shoe with a duct tape. I managed to put thé shoe on a fairly good place and duct taped it and put thé horse on a small pen
