Two Questions, 1) re tattoo, 2) re official workouts

(UPDATE on Post Number 11)

Hey, all. Thanks in advance for reading this and any help you can offer me.

I bought a four-year-old tattooed TB. However, when I look up his name, it looks like he was never raced. Plus, I cannot completely read the tattoo, but I have his name (supposedly). Is there any way someone would be able to look up his name and find out what the tattoo SHOULD be? If I have that, I can probably say yes, or no, that’s it. I just want to be sure this horse is who I was told he is. Or figure out who he is if I need to. If this can be done, I can PM name.

Then, also, since I’ve been obsessed with the retired racehorse project, I am curious to see if this horse has had an “official workout” on the track, to see if he would have been eligible (had I entered him during the proper time) for RRP. Also, I’m curious why he never raced. I’m wondering if he was ever injured. But he’s a great youngster. I’m enjoying him. Sane and quiet.

Thanks!

UPDATE ON POST 11

You can use the tattoo lookup feature on the jockey club website to help. You can match a partial tattoo and markings to a horse: https://www.registry.jockeyclub.com/registry.cfm?page=dotRegistryHelpDeskTattooFAQ

Thanks, Timex. I did try this with a bunch of combos and the names that came up didn’t match the one I was looking for. So not sure if I’m just misreading the tattoo, or the tattoo does not belong to the name I was told.

If you enter the “name you were told” in Equibase, it will tell you if there was ever an official work. The connections listed with the horse in Equibase might be willing to share information, such as why he didn’t start.

Thanks, SaratogaTB. I did notice on that page they list starts, which he shows zero. I didn’t know if there was a separate area that listed official workouts (other than races) and don’t see anything listed. I’m just wondering if he didn’t have any. ?? Hmm. Thanks.

Equibase only lists works from the last six months. Once they’re older than that they fall off the page. So the fact that no works are shown doesn’t necessarily mean they didn’t happen (at one time).

Brisnet wil give you lifetime workout reports (www.brisnet.com) IIRC it costs like 50 cents per horse or some such thing.

Get some pics of the tattoo, and of any white markings on the horse, and we’ll tell you who he is. A good tattoo mystery is the best

I will do that! I will post them tomorrow. Thanks.

Thanks. I’m not familiar with this site. I will check it out.

Okay, I delayed responding to this (I’m OP) because I tried to get pics of tattoo and I also sent an inquiry to the Jockey Club. I just got the response back from the Jockey Club saying my description and the two letters I sent didn’t match anything on their records. What they didn’t address, and maybe they just don’t do this, is if the name matched any of those numbers I submitted. Sigh.

Well, I still didn’t get great pics, but I’ll post what I have here along with a video of my less-than-cooperative 4 year old.

My additional question is, is it POSSIBLE to get the name I was given and find out what his registration/tattoo SHOULD be? Does anyone here have the ability to do that? (I would love to hear, I can PM the name.) I just am having a hard time matching the name to the horse. And I am really just trying to get background info.

Thanks for reading.

He sure looks like a P00 something, but supposedly that doesn’t match his name. Any help out there?

Thanks in advance.

Can you give us a picture with his forelock out of the way so all of his face is visible? It looks like he has some white up high in the photo you attached.

How about this one: https://www.dropbox.com/s/v21reyp7lptbg4u/2016-05-27%2016.47.33.jpg?dl=0

Please let me know if those original links no longer work… I was moving things around on Dropbox.

Much better! PM me the name please.

Thanks. I don’t know what I was thinking about with that first picture!

The tattoo number should be the letter for his year of birth + the last 5 digits of his registration number.

But… unless they’ve changed their policies, the Jockey Club won’t just give out registration numbers over the phone. It can’t hurt to try, but I’m not sure how much success you will have.

I can’t really tell anything off those tattoo pics because of the angle and blurriness, although the tattoo looks super clear. I see maybe an 080 at the end? Is there someone in the area with experience reading them who can take a look for you? Remember, they are block style letters and numbers.

Yeah, I do agree, they are pretty crappy pictures. I will still try to get better ones. It does look like a P under my DH’s thumb there watching the video. Then to me it looks like 008 something maybe. But trying all those combinations, nothing came up with the name I was given. I was told he was a 2012, which would match the P if that’s what I’m seeing.

Median cowlick above eye level.”

Sound right? Is unraced as well.

Two of us came up with the same result at the same time…
