I know this has been talked about before but I need advice and help.
I’m going to start doing the ranch riding classes. Trail, patterns, cow work, and novice reining.
I also do cow sorting events.
I’ve been told to get a ranch cutter saddle.
I’ve always riding in western equation seat show saddles, when I showed at breed shows.
Well I have my silver saddle on consignment since silver if frowned upon in these events, plus it makes cueing the horse harder for fast turns. Since its made for equation lol
Anyway, I love the look of the butterfly skirt reining saddles. The ranch cutters I’ve noticed either have smooth seats or rough out seat and fenders.
I’ve tried four different saddles so far and none of them felt right. I realize I’ll need to break them in but I also realized what I would like on a saddle.
Which is a padded rough seat, but not fenders lol
Question is; does it matter if it’s a reiner or should I be focused on the ranch cutters with the taller horns?
I also go to state parks and trail ride.
Please give me your opinion on this
Thank you so much:)
Those tall, skinny horns are really not that safe for everyday riding and training other than when you need them for the wilder cutting movements.
Definitively not good trail riding.
Are you riding in a training stable?
If so, the trainer should have different kinds of saddles to let you try, see what works best for you.
Here are some you can look thru and see what is selling for what you want:

The a623 is a cowhorse saddle with a little more horn and still reining friendly, so are a few others.
Like with any saddle, what fits one person may not fit another, you have to try what is best for you.
The requirements for those classes will fit many kinds of saddles just fine.
There are many cowhorse saddles that are a happy medium, have enough horn to cut, strong enough to rope and still not as much in the way as the real skinny, tall cutting saddle horn and bucket seat those tend to have that put you back in your pockets.
Most here use their regular ranch saddles and the reiners use plain reining padded seat saddles with minimal silver and it seems that everything goes for showing in those newer ranch and versatility classes.
They are a good way to start showing without too much technical stuff to it and everyone is really having a good time in those.
Thank you. Very helpful advice.
I will do that.
