There is a dog down the street that has been barking all. night. long. Non stop.
The owners are not home. The dog is outside. Animal control has been called and a message has been left. The cops can’t do anything.
Even with the windows closed, it is loud. The dog is unhappy. We are miserable.
Not asking for any input, I guess–I think we have done all we can–but holy shit, does this suck.
This is when a box fan set on high is your friend. It can drown out just about any sound. When we get a new fan we have to try them out to make sure they are not “whisper quiet” as if that is a benefit.

Buy one of those bird house bark deterrents, and have the neighbor next to the dog, put it in their yard aimed at the dog. They really do work. One of my friend’s had a neighbor with 3 dogs that used to always bark when she went out back, and after she put one of them up, they wouldn’t bark when she went out back.
Note- I would only do this after making sure dog was getting fed and had water. It would be awful to ignore a dog’s deperate attempts to get attention if it was starving/out of water.
I totally understand. There’s a dog down the street from me who does the exact same thing. Happens when the owners are home, happens when they’re not home. Police have been out several times and always say “well it’s just a dog, nothing we can do about it” and leave. Owner of dog complains that people report him to the police and says that his dog never does anything wrong and everyone in the neighborhood must hate dogs to report him. I honestly don’t know how they can live in that house.
I live in a 3rd floor apartment, and the people below me have an annoying little yappy toy dog that sometimes barks for hours at a time when they are gone.
First time I complained to management was when the owners had left the dog overnight and it barked from 11pm-3am consistantly; I had to wake up at 5am for a committment and was not happy.
Second time I’ve complained was a weekday morning - owners had gone to work, I presume, and I was working on an assignment before my classes. Little dog yapped/howled/whined for two hours straight.
It’s not a nice dog, either. You pass it on your way in/out of the building and it’ll go for your ankles. I daydream of punting that little **** across the pavement if it tried to bite me.
surely there is a noise compliance in town?
I would just keep reporting it.

Agree with checking on the dog to make sure it is ok. And keep calling the cops. I am sure there is a noise ordinance.
The dog seemed to be fine, and yes…we do have a noise ordinance. The cops said they couldn’t do anything, though, if the owners weren’t home. I am unsure if the animal control people picked up the message and made a visit. The owners came home around about 11 pm and let the poor dog in.
I really hope that’s the last we hear of the dog :-/ How close do you have to be for the birdhouse things to be effective? We have line of site, sort of…

Thunderstorm CD worked wonders. Any white noise you can find that works for you. You must have a player that will repeat the CD throughout the night. The sound of rain and rumbling thunder did drown out the hound… Good luck! I was very much relieved when I found that solution.:yes:
We lived in an apartment many years ago, and one day a neighbor moved in downstairs with a lab mix and a beagle… uh oh. He was in the ground floor apartment right under us and at first, he just let the dogs out to run around the complex while he was at work. Management told him he couldn’t do this, of course. So then he wrapped chicken wire around his patio (another violation) to keep the dogs in - and then he left for work with the dogs out on the patio. And they barked from 5am until he got home at night - which is when he turned on his stereo and dialed it to 11. Thumping or barking for hours and hours!
We complained to him. Did no good. We complained to management, and they talked to him, but he ignored them. The whole apartment building was being aurally tortured by this one guy.
One morning, after being awakened yet again, I snapped. I went out onto our deck, looked over the railing so I could get the dog’s attentions, and poured about a 1/2 gallon of red Kool-ade on them. They spent the entire morning licking eachother - and not barking! Best part is that bad neighbor came home to two sticky (and red!) dogs.
He eventually got evicted, but it took awhile.
And yes, I’m completely proud of myself. 
I hope he got ants too.
Ditto the fan or a radio turned to a non-station for static. That ‘white noise’ really helps you fall asleep despite the yapping.
We had to keep a log of a neighbor’s dog’s barking, night after night after night. This way every time we called A/C, we could say “Spot barked from 11:03pm until 1:38 am. Then started again at 4:56 and stopped at 7:10.”
That helped earn them 3 warnings and then the dog disappeared.

This punishes not only the dog that is barking, but every other dog in the neighborhood plus people’s hamsters and gerbils that isn’t.
Next door neighbors are deaf & have three dogs. They left one out one night and went to bed. Dog barked for hours until DH got fed up & called AC/police around 1am. We were out on the deck watching as they tried to get the dog into a carrier while flashing lights into the house to try to get someone to wake up. It was cold & dog (little terrier) would have probably frozen to death. How do you forget one out of three dogs?
Anyway, they woke in to morning to a notice posted on their door and a nice fine to get dog back.
This is my worry. I have two dogs of my own and don’t want to punish them for the other dog barking. It looks like we’re also too far away for it to work.
The dog has been relatively quiet–a few barks here and there–so hopefully the problem is resolved.
the sad thing is most of these dogs who bark endlessly are trying to communicate how unhappy they are with their living conditions. Dog is miserable, neighbors are miserable, and it’s all because of one irresponsible owner.

Yup. We have a neighbor a couple blocks over (too far to throw Kool-ade) who lets his little dog out at night (free to roam of course) and after the dog finishes his business, it scratches on the door and starts barking. They will ignore it for up to 45 minutes. It’s woken us up many times since he lets the dog out very late. Our houses are literally built with plastic coated card board walls (cheapo builders. :mad:) so there is no way they can’t hear it. I don’t understand this! It’s so annoying! Do they just filter the noise out??
Are “they” a couple? Maybe they let the dog out and leave him out because he doesn’t let them *******! in peace?

Hahaha, could be. I’ve never met them so I don’t know who all is in the house.
