UK "yards" - other than Harrington -- suggestions?

So I shopped for a horse on the continent when I was over there for work (more learning experience than anything else), and have been window shopping on-line ever since. With the pound being down, still [another penny today], and several COTH forum posters recommending shopping in the UK, I thought I would throw out this question to those in the know:

What “yards” would you recommend other than Harrington (whose horses are STUNNING, but looking for more than one option)? I’ve been looking at the UK websites, and have noticed ads from what look like maybe dealers or perhaps consignment barns, ads from what look like small training stables (maybe they buy, or have an investor buy, a young horse, then bring along and sell???), what look like breeders (big and small) who train their own, and what look like private sellers - kids off to college, or pregnant, or every other reason folks let a horse go. Wondering if there are any red flags you’d be willing to share.

I love the Billy stud horses too, but none of the horses are priced, leading me to believe I can’t afford them, especially given their accomplishments. I am just an older amateur looking for something easy to have in the barn that will bravely jump around adult amateurs / no more than 1.2 meters. Not sure I need the scope Harrington and Billy Stud are offering. A selling point for me for the British horses is how many appear to have been ridden (at least schooled) XC. I like to do stuff other than show, so a horse that has seen a little of the world would be awesome, especially when somebody else did the heavy lifting for me!!

In the same vein, are there import companies based in UK that fly horses out of England (vs. Germany/Belgium), and which ones have you had good or bad experiences with?

Last question: is the reason there are so many KWPN horses advertised on British websites a function of geographic proximity to Holland? I noticed many more advertised as KWPN than Hanovarian, Zanghersheide, Holsteiner, etc. Wondered if it was a preference for Dutch horses, or because Holland is closer, or because everyone who has one wants to sell it :D?

“…import companies based in UK that fly horses out of England (vs. Germany/Belgium)”

Horses now ship out of Shannon, Ireland to the US, which is great for an Irish horse, not extremely helpful for one from the UK: http://eventingconnect.today/2016/03/05/shipping-horses-from-ireland-to-the-usa-just-got-easier/

They show London Stansted on that map but the route appears to be Liege to NY. Horses did fly out of Stansted to the Rio Olympics though

I think more kwpn because yes, lots are bred and also more registries seem to be erkend with kwpn than the reverse, thus not requiring additional inspections for mares/foals.

If you are basing this comment about a lot more KWPN horses from looking at the Harrington website, they shop for most of their sales horses from dealers in Holland

Hi, I am from the UK and in the know & buy and produce young horses mainly bought in the U.K. For eventing (2/3* level) and show jumping (1.30/1.40) I’m very small time though! I can give any advice if needs be- just be careful- a lot of crap comes to the UK and are heavily ‘prepped’ (you won’t want to know :frowning: ) to make fancy videos to lure in the Americans especially. Buyer beware. Also NEVER EVER trust European vettings. English vettings however are on the whole extremely through but ALWAYS get new X-rays. Many are faked. Over here the big yards have caught on to the American market so will charge over the top prices yet you can get a heck of a bargain in some yards which wouldn’t be so clued up- so I am more than happy to give recommendations. The big yards and names are on the ball and know exactly what they have… we have a lot of young event riders though who produce super Irish horses that would kick ass in the equitation/hunter ring and you could purchase for less than 15k easily! A big yard would put 50k on it.

Is this Harrington farm the same who breeds/bred Cleveland Bays?

No, they’re different

Would definitely be worth getting in touch with Billy Stud, the prices may well not be as high as you expect! They always have a few advertised on HorseQuest which will give you a guide price.

The problem in the UK is that breeders are very small-scale compared to the European breeders (Paul Schockemohle alone breeds nearly as many horses each year as all the UK TB breeders do) which is why so many Brits buy in Europe or Ireland like the rest of the world. Unlike the rest of the EU, the UK does not rate the horse as an ‘agricultural’ animal and there is no government interest in horse breeding so it is overwhelmingly amateur (even TB breeders who consider themselves to be an ‘industry’). That means it can be hard to see many horses in one go. On the other hand, horses are generally well handled.

Brendon Stud produces top horses and is having a reduction sale at the end of the month http://brendonpyecombe.co.uk/brendonstud/ prices starting at £ 8K

Billy stud produces many very good horses and it would be worth checking out the cost because you might be pleasantly surprised. Prices start at about £10 K

http://www.countryfarmstud.co.uk/ coloured, but breeds for function as well as colour

http://langallerfarm.co.uk/forsale.php has bred Olympic horses and has nice stock

The comment from Truebutterfly about eventers is true enough. Contact any they are likely to bite your hand off: no money made in eventing!

The advantage of the UK is that you can pick up the phone and speak straight to the seller/breeder etc without a translator.

Race horses are travelled around the world from the UK. e.g, http://www.irt.com/ or http://www.pedenbloodstock.com/ so adding another to a load should be possible.

OK, thanks, BWP!

Are they close by one another?

Well, compared to Canada, everything is close to one another!

^ True, dat!
I guess I meant are they in the same county? I may ask my English farrier- he’s from Hertfordshire or Buckinghamshire and may know of either/both…

Luke Boardman is another good one, but he seems to be constantly getting and selling new horses. Ross Hill as well has several nice ones; I think he buys from a breeder in Holland and starts them but has some all over the spectrum.

I know everyone in the US has a hard-on for 16h+ horses, but I wouldn’t shy away from a good 15.2/15.3 horse here, because horses here on average seem a lot bigger bodied than in the US and take up plenty of leg.

I’d also look at private sellers if you can. You can get a hell of a deal on a bombproof 1.2m horse in the UK from a private seller.
