I’m going to be moving my goal to my property soon. Unfortunately, the lady I’m getting him from doesn’t have the place to wean him, and so the trip is going to be more stressful than we would like. Is ulcerguard a recommended ulcer preventative for foals? Or would you recommend another brand/procedure? Thank you.
Ulcerguard can be used in foals, but you would probably have an easier time using Gastroguard as you can easily dose that by weight.
Ulcerguard and Gastrogard are the same product with different labels. Ulcerguard is approved over the counter at a dose of 1/4 syringe for normal size adult horse to prevent ulcers. Gastrogard is approved as a prescription treatment for existing ulcers at a dose of 1 full syringe for a normal size adult horse.
And yes, it’s probably a good idea. Talk to your vet about the appropriate dose for the current weight of your foal.
Right but the above poster is correct that the label on a GG tube is marked by weight which might make it easier to properly dose a foal vs a full size horse.
Interesting! I never noticed they were labeled differently. Learn something new every day
Gastroguard has a higher concentration of omeprazole than Ulcerguard. They are not the same product.
They are exactly the same product. 2.28gm omeprazole per tube
GG is dosed at a whole tube for treatment for an average horse.
UG is dosed at 1/4 tube for prevention for an average horse.
You can use GG like UG, and UG like GG
GG label:
“Each GastroGard syringe contains 2.28 grams omeprazole”
UG label:
" Each tube contains 2.28 grams omeprazole. "
Huh, I did not know that. What is the point of having to have a prescription then, for GG, I wonder?
GG is labelled as a treatment - thus requiring a script. UG is labelled as a preventative, so OTC. Each notch on the tube used to equal a weight (maybe 50# if memory serves correct). So 5 notches on a GG = 250#. If that helps with dosing.
