Ulcer meds trial - latest thinking?

New horse is super hot and reactive. Have tried calming supps, high fat low carb diet, 24/7 turnout etc. maybe it’s just her! Trainer suggested 3-4 days of ulcer medication.

What’s the latest thinking on dose and length of trial, before I talk to vet and get into a discussion about scoping etc.

Are blue pop rocks still used?

She’s gone through a lot recently. Doing a trial of ulcer meds makes perfect sense. My horse was recently unusually hot/reactive and a course of ulcer meds solved that problem right up. Worth reading the Nexium/Esomeprazole thread or at least parts of it. There are several proper (though small) investigations showing it is just as effective if not more so than omeprazole.

I have had good results with 1 bottle of esomeprazole = 1 tube of Ulcergard and treat accordingly (a 14-capsule bottle a day for 2 weeks, then titrate down for the next 2-3 weeks) but others have a different approach.

Cheapest esomeprazole is frequently Costco but Amazon has lots of generic options. YMMV but if it’s ulcers I tend to see some sort of result within a day or two.

The nexium thread is linked in my user card (click my username, it’ll pop up.)

Three capsules a day has worked very well for me and many others. Cheap & easy.

Thanks folks - the esomeprazole is arriving tomorrow!

The vet put mine on Sucralfate initially, he went back to his usual behavior when taken off it so we’ve put him on it permanently, I believe it is fairly safe to use continuously. Vet said several horses at the track stay on it, so I trust her opinion. I also give him Outlast.
