Ulcer prevention for weanling?

Hey all. After nearly 2 decades of horse ownership, I’ve decided to purchase a weanling to be my future riding/ranch horse when my current horses retire. I’m not a stranger to horses, but weanlings are a little foreign to me.

She was weaned last week and will be travelling two hours to me in a week or two. This will be her first “real” trailer ride. Should I have a couple tubes of ulcer guard or something on hand to give as a preventative measure? I know I would do this for my older horses, but I’m truly unsure if this would be wise for a weanling or not.

Thank you!

I would, just to be safe. I’m bringing home a weanling this weekend and sent Ulcergard via Amazon to her breeder so she could start it a few days before I pick her up. She’ll be getting 1/4 tube each day. Congrats on your weanling!

I just picked up my weanling 2 weeks ago and gave omeprazole for the past 2 weeks, starting as soon as he got off the trailer and then weaned him off of it. I’m sure it helped quite a bit as trailer rides and new places can be quite stressful for these little guys. So I’m for it as well
