Ulcers! ugh

I have a mare who is on a second round of omeprazole. I’m frustrated! Yes, this mare gets plenty of turnout and is fed alfalfa. Figured I’d pick the brain of the my fellow horsemen. and…go!
.

misoprostol? sucralfate? other sources of pain/stress? what does the vet say?

Was the horse scoped? If so, what kind and grade of ulcers? How much does she weigh? Omeprazole won’t help glandular or pyloric ulcers, and the tube only supports around a 1250lb horse for a treatment dose.

What’s the whole diet? Work load? What’s the turnout like - size, number of buddies, is there a bully anywhere?

What type of ulcers? What grade? Did the vet explain why they only did omeprazole?

Echoing the “what type and what grade” questions! Also, did you scope before and between treatments? What were those results? It’s become anecdotally common in my circles to take two rounds of omeprazole even when treating correctly.

I second (or third) the question about a scope… I was certain my horse had ulcers over the winter (fit a whole list of symptoms) and treated him with a full round of Gastroguard und Sucrabest (vet suggested). When it didn’t really help, had him scoped and…worms :upside_down_face:
