Gelding has been on Ultium for years. New bag opened three days ago. Won’t touch it (eats all his supplements just fine). To test, I offered some to my other gelding who normally doesn’t get any (he’s a chow hound) and he wouldn’t touch it. Smells and looks fine. Could it just be a bad bag? Is it a fixed formula?
I’d take it back and see if you can get another bag with a different lot number on it. I experienced this from time to time with my horse when he was on Ultium. It’s supposed to be a fixed formula but there were times that something was likely changed.
I had that problem with a bag of dog food a few weeks ago. Opened a new bag and none of our 3 dogs would eat it. One of them gobbled some down (habit, he didn’t want the cat to get it) before we noticed nobody eating and he puked it back. Our farm store took it back without question and replaced it. He said he would check into it with the company to see if they had any other problems but I haven’t seen him since.
If none of them will eat it I wouldn’t try to feed any of it.
I had this happen with dog food once too. I actually called the company and they sent me a coupon for a free bag and another coupon for another discounted bag. They were very apologetic and said they were going to look into the lot of food further. They mentioned that the bag may have gone bad during shipment to the store due to extreme heat.
Just take it back to the feed store. They can replace it, and will get credit from Purina for the return. Just make sure you get a bag with a different lot number on it if you still have the old bag to reference.
