Ultium Gastric Care?

Curious about this feed for a very ulcer prone horse (long story short he is an ottb and on stall rest due to an injury). I’m not unhappy with his current feed regiment, but if the ultium gastric care can help more then I am more than happy to switch.

I like it but you have to feed quite a lot to get a full serving of Outlast into the horse. IMHO, better to buy a bag of grain and a bag of Outlast and mix appropriately.

Purina’s website said for my horse’s weight/activity level I’d only need to feed 4lbs per day… I’ll have to look into that more.

I took my ulcer-prone horse off of all grains and just feed pelleted alfalfa in lieu thereof. He has done great. Can you get away with no grain?

What’s he on now?

Injuries require a lot of nutrition for the best quality healing (well, fast, etc). I wouldn’t not feed something well-fortified, even if it’s a good v/m supplement. But healing needs quality protein too, so ration balancers are great for the easier keepers, or the less easy keeper you need to keep on the thinner side.

I work for a feed store, and we sell SO MUCH Outlast. It’s been such a game changer, and customers love it. Purina is also sticking it in other grains as well.

Outlast as a supplement is a much easier way to get the benefits of its dosing without allll the calories from the amount of Ultium (or any of the feeds) required to get enough Outlast

4lb of Ultium Gastric Care contains 1 serving of Outlast. That will work on the stomach pH for about 2-4 hours. If you split the feeding into 2, you could get less of a pH increase and/or for less time.

When I got him in late August he was very thin, like a 2 on the body condition scale. He’s at like a 3-4 now. So he’s been easy to put weight on. But I wouldn’t call him an easy keeper, because he has been eating as much grass hay as he wants (easily 30+ lbs per day), 1 lb Renew Gold, 1 lb Nutrena topline balance, 2 cups hemp hulls, bio flax, forefront equine digestive supplement, smart tendon pellets, another herbal ulcer supplement, and a few lbs of alfalfa pellets/chopped alfalfa. His grain/supplements are split into 4 feedings and his hay is in front of him 24/7. If the Ultium GC can simplify all that it would be great.

It’s all going to depend on how much Outlast you think you need, or he says he needs (if any). 4lb of UGC could more or replace the 1lb Balance, 1lb Renew Gold, and a few pounds alfalfa pellets in terms of calories. Not knowing what herbal ulcer supplement he’s on, or if it’s even doing anything, I couldn’t say whether 1 dose of Outlast a day (in that 4lb Ultium) would suffice.

The only thing to do is try.
