Underwear for long distance rides.....

I know this has been touched on before but you long distance riders out there (50 miles or more) what do you wear under your breeches? I don’t care about panty lines just want something that isn’t going to rub me after that many miles…

Commando

Yup.

Good athletic pants with a built in crotch and you’re good to go. I gave up wearing breeches and just buy the best stretchy yoga pants I can find. I love the ones that GAP sells, they come in an X-Long length which is perfect for riding.

I third going commando (sans underwer, if’n you’re unfamiliar with the commando term.) Underwear is over rated. I wear running tights or running shorts, tho I’ve only done LD (30 miles) officially.

I normally wear running shorts beneath - since I’ve been known when it’s hot out to simply stand in vet check and blithely peel off my riding tights and go in shorts and half chaps for the next loop.

Yep I know commando term well, if fact one of the rides i do has a commando award! I wear Aanastadt Das breeches and LOVE them, but my underwear tends to rub pretty bad after 50 miles at the crotch leg area. Mmmmmm may have to think about this…hee hee

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again - the best underwear for riding are the ones you would not want to be seen in - big, ugly granny panties. Briefs. The most unsexy underwear you can possibly find.

Even granny panties, barely theres, Underarmors… are going to chafe after too many miles. The fewer seams and lines, the better.

I thought I was the only one out there in yoga pants, chaps, and no undies! Now I don’t feel so naughty! Is that a good thing though?

I find UnderArmors are the best for when I don’t want to go commando (like if I think I might have to climb through barbed wire and don’t want to risk a snag in a bad place ;)), but yeah, commando is the way to go for long rides. I don’t have much problem with actual chafing (like, that leaves you rubbed raw even after you take them off) with UnderArmor skivvies, but they definitely do start getting uncomfortable after 8 hours or so in the saddle.

I actually think big cotton granny panties are the worst for long rides. They bunch and shift really badly IME. Though the granny panty style in microfiber or another seamless stretchy material is usually the best.

People, I’ve done 50 mile rides in the appropriately selected granny panties with no chafing. I cannot IMAGINE going commando…you riders are much braver than I. You may actually need to go a size smaller in the big girl panties as they do tend to run larger. I’m not wearing baggie undies, just ugly ones.

However, it does take trial and error. And, to try and state this as delicately as possible, being very, um, well groomed in that area helps a great deal as well.

I wonder also if some of it has to do with individual conformation? I have a friend that is always having some sort of issue regardless of undergarment choice, while I have never had the issue except with one very unfortunate pair of undies. (I’m sure there are many endurance riders who have shed undies mid-ride!)

I do, however, get heat rash on my shins…

Avoid synthetic fibers unless they’re specifically athletic, wicking type material… a shiny “fancy” seam can turn into a chafe nightmare on a warm day.

If you do chafe… diaper rash creams are a godsend for fast healing.

And, I did hear one endurance rider tell how she borrowed scissors from a fellow rider during a ride and, at a continuous trot and without removing anything else, cut her own underwear off of herself to stop the chafing! (All I can say is, her horse must have a smoother trot than mine…)

oH, the heat rash on the shins!!! How right you are. My lower legs are a mess after a ride, usually fade after a few days. I forgot about all that wonderful stuff! and cutting panties off mid ride that is a talented person! My 50 miler comes up at the end of month so i am going to experment with my different underwear during the training ride but commando just doesn’t appeal to me…

Thank you Lisa for explaining “commando”. I was just about to do a google search on Commando brand underwear!

Me too! Thanks for expanding my horse vocabulary!

I’m sorry, it didn’t even occur to me to clarify the term ‘commando’! I hate to think what all you would have come up with if you’d Googled THAT!

LOL  glad to hear I am not the only commando person. OMG panties may be cute and sexy on some and that is GREAT!!! I must have the oddest shaped backside in the world because they ALL crawl up where I don’t want them to be. And, since I am a majorly ADD :o all I can think about is “my panties are in a bunch” and that just doesn’t work for me. So commando works for me

I splash my backside with powder before I go riding (I am not endurance riding - just trail riding around 8 miles or so but it is HOT and HUMID here!!) and am thinking about getting one of those little purse size powder shakers and take it with me…if she can cut her panties off at a trot I wonder if I can shake powder down there at a trot?

For all of you ladies riding commando, I would recommed you tuck a pair of panties or shorts in your saddle pack. I know of a commando endurance rider who snagged her tights while riding and ripped out the back. There was a full moon shining …

 I carry a couple rolls of vetwrap so I suppose I could make some vetwrap undies (Vundies!) if I had to. Probably wouldn’t be comfortable though.

Hey, I believe you! I’ve just had the opposite experience. I used to only ride in cotton granny panties when I was training mostly show horses, but once I started serious trail and endurance riding I started having major problems with them. I think it does depend a lot on personal conformation, riding style, etc.

I have to say, too, I find the opposite about, erm, personal grooming. I find that too much grooming down there leads to extreme chafing for me. Once I literally couldn’t ride for a week after waxing and then going for a 6 hour ride the next day.

I do find that if I go out for 4 hours or so of relatively intense riding, I can usually tell if there is going to be a problem even if one hasn’t developed yet. I say experiment with options, do some trial runs, and see what works for you.

And now that you all know way too much about what is going on in my pants, I think I will bow out of this thread.
