Underweight rescue due to foal in 2 weeks!!!

Uno(who hasn’t been improving as well as Dos), was due to foal a couple weeks ago, vets think she may be carrying longer due to the foal having delayed development after being malnourished. She currently fully bagged and very restless so hopefully she boots that baby out soon so she can start feeding herself up.

Dos, the younger mare, is improving very fast. As there is no record of who she’s in foal to we can’t find out her date of service but vets think she’ll foal within the next couple of weeks. She got about half a bag but seems very content and happy at the moment.

Both foals look healthy so far, good strong heart beats!

In case anyone is wondering what we are feeding them, both mares get:
”‹”‹”‹”‹”‹”‹Mcmillians rapid gain 2kg/day.
Dunstan Asset 1kg/day.
NRM Sweetfeed(maybe half a scoop? Bugger all, this is just for taste).
HR Fiskens Broodmare mix 2kg/day.
Barley(soaked) 1kg/day.
300mls of an omega 3 oil blend(i forget the name).
”‹”‹
That’s split into 5 small feeds per day, as well as ad lib hay, probably 2.5-3 bales per day, plus electrolytes in one of their water supplies and a salt block.

Maybe Uno was just farther along in her pregnancy so she just had/has a bigger slope to climb

There is no “due date”, there is only an average (340-343 days). Many many many mares go longer than that. Until you get to about 370, there really is no “delay”

Hopefully her restlessness is the foal moving into position and you’ll have a baby soon!

Half a bag on Dos could mean next week or in a month, so…

Can’t wait to see everyone!

A couple of people have asked how we got an approximate due date for Uno, she is reg with the JC and they record all breeding for mares, that’s how we found out who she is in foal to(and is coincidentally the reason why I’m calling her Uno not her real name as the SO stands his stallion at 20k and there’s currently a bit of a court battle between the girls former owner, the SO and the SPCA).
The JC also records date of cover and date of foaling, and Uno had previously had 6 foals, so we averaged out all her prior pregnancies to get an approximate date(all 6 of her prior pregnancies foaled between 343-349 days, while she’s currently at 363 days).

Both mares and foals look healthy so we aren’t stressing yet! I currently have a mare of my own at close to 370 days so maybe my mares just like cooking a bit longer 😂😂

So exciting!!! Jingles for healthy deliveries for both!

Idea of name for Uno baby is “little one” in spanish ; Pequeñita (o if male) also Chequita (o) or Ninita (o)

Ooo I like Ninita!! She’s still dripping collustrum and seems determined to hold onto this baby as long as possible. Maybe we should have a naming competition while she tortures me😂😭

Omega 3 oil and copious amounts of hard feed. Like me partner says, horses should shit cash 😂

well if it is a filly that works, for sure

If there’s a naming contest, it’s already been won…

cannot think of anything that plays on the name “Two”

segunda (o) , second ( also a type of bit)
otro (a) another one
pareja twosome, though as a pair, like couple
poco few Poco is a popular barn name in western US
duplo double, duplicate

No baby yet?
