Unused Prescriptions after Horse Death

My horse just passed away a couple of days after my vet prescribed Sucralfate. So I now have over 1000 tabs of this stuff and no horse to use it on. I can’t sell it legally, can I? Anyone have suggestions on what to do in this situation? I don’t want to throw it out.

I had a horse years ago that when he died, we had prescription stuff left over that was still good (and had cost $$$$). I asked the vet if they had another client that could use it - they passed my info on to a local horse owner who could use it and I gave it to that person.

When I lost a horse that was on several medications I contacted my vet and I donated his left over meds to another client who could benefit from them. The vet very nicely picked them up and dropped them off to the next user.

I benefited for my dog when someone lost their dog and they had a full package of something I was using on my dog.

Agree with the above replies. I’ve done the same thing when losing dogs or cats.

If you have a rescue in your area you could donate to them as well.

Can that legally be done with prescription meds? I wouldn’t be comfortable with donating prescriptions straight to a rescue but would donate to a rescue’s vet who could give them the meds.

Yes! I believe the stuff I donated (mentioned above) went to one of our local rescues. That is what the vet said, that she knew just the right horse to pass this along to (and that it was at one of the local rescues).

Edit to add - The left over supplements I donated directly to the rescue.

Nothing to add on to the suggestions about what to do with the meds, but very sorry for your loss.

I’m so sorry you lost your guy

I’d do like reefy said - ask your vet if another client has a need for those meds, or even if they will ask their local colleagues if they have someone in need. If there is an Rx from a vet, you could give it to that person, or even sell at a discount as I’m sure they’d be ecstatic to get that much for less.

I love the idea of donating to a rescue, but I also know lots of “rescues” wouldn’t handle things properly.

I’m a med hoarder. If you plan on getting another horse, I’d keep it.
