Unusual Bump on Rump - Anyone have any ideas?

I was looking at a horse to buy recently and noticed a small (about 3 inches long) bubble/bump on the the rear. It felt like it was filled with air and I could push it all the way down with little resistance. When I pushed it in, it felt like the muscle was torn or divided underneath… Could it be some sort of muscle dent from being kicked? I just would like to know before buying and out of curiosity. *Sorry no pics. Looks like a big bug bite irritation bump.

Ideas?

It could certainly be an old injury. I have a friend whose mare was double barrel kicked and has two swollen and puffy looking spots as a result. The spots are hoof sized.

Did you ask the owners what is was? Hard to say without knowing more info.
Could be old injury, hematoma, injection site inflammation, insect bite.
Are you planning to have a pre-purchase exam?

Tear in the muscle sheath? Is the horse sound? Is there any heat at the site of the ‘bump’?

My horse has a couple of these; both were the result of being kicked. No soundness issues at all with him.

Sounds exactly like what my horse has too - he was also kicked by a pasturemate. I’ve had a couple vets remark on it and want to poke it, and they’ve all said the muscle fibre beneath was split by the kick. He was never lame or even sore on it, and it’s still there years later.

My jumping mare has one of these. Came in from winter turnout with it, and it’s in a spot that would be unlikely to be a kick (up high, almost on top, and besides, no one would DARE kick her). Showed it to the vet when she got her teeth done that spring. Torn superficial muscle layer. It’s small, and not a problem for her.
