One of the horses in my barn has a sweat stain from the mane down to the base of the shoulder, forming a triangle. It is there each morning but nowhere else on his body. What could be causing this?
There was a thread about this once before…I only remember because I boarded a mare that had a similar issue. It wasn’t as large as it sounds that you’re describing but it was the same idea. It would dry and there would be a white outline around it, so even if it wasn’t wet you always knew where it was.
I think someone speculated that it might be some kind of nerve damage…?
Maybe try searching for “sweat patch” or something like that.
My old guy (35+ years old) just start presenting with that in the last year or so. My vet wasn’t concerned, he said it was just his parasympathetic nervous system (I probably butchered that, sorry!).
Thank you both I will try to research this. The horse is a boarder, a 23 year old quarter horse who has been with me since last fall. His owner mentioned it to me but she is not concerned. The owners haven’t come out much over the winter. They stated they are quite confident with my care. I hadn’t noticed this until just recently as I always deal with his blanket from the other side. I try to look after the boarder’s horses as if they were my own.
Can’t figure out how to search for "sweat patch) Can you help?
Was this the thread you were referring to? Cat Tap - I found it by going to Search Forum. I hit advanced search, and in the Keyword box I typed “sweat patch”.

thank you Amy. There wasn’t much information that was relevant. I think the sweat patch in the case of the horse in my barn may be pain related. I had noticed the sweat the last few days and last night he came in from the field quite lame on the right front. Sweat patch is on his right side. There was heat on the inside of his foot. After picking out the foot I did find a stone that may have been causing discomfort. I thought that he may have a stone bruise or possibly an abscess. I notified the owner, left the horse in this morning and she poulticed his foot.
I have found with any of my horses that foot soreness usually went away within a couple of days after poulticing with animalintex and a duct tape boot… Hope he is better soon.
