Unusual ulcer symptoms? Or something else?

Afternoon all,

The pony has been a bit stiff behind lately, so (in consultation with a good, experienced vet), we injected his hocks last Friday. He had Saturday on stall rest, Sunday-Monday on turn-out, and I rode him walk-trot on Tuesday.

He seemed to find it a bit easier to pick his back feet up for me to clean them, but his attitude was terrible. He was even shirtier than usual to tack up, and under saddle he was pinning ears, kicking out at my leg, just really unhappy. There’s no heat or swelling around the injection sites.

I’m going to give him a few days and see how he goes (unless it gets worse, of course). I’m in contact with the vet. But something that’s been playing in the back of my mind is ulcers. Perhaps a flare-up from the sedation(?), or perhaps it was contributing to his stuffy way of going more than the hock arthritis. He has always (well, the few months I’ve owned him) been grouchy to tack up. A few times he has swung around and nipped at my leg when under saddle. He also has a strange habit of stretching out to pee either before, during or after I ride, he’ll do this maybe once every 2-3 rides. He’ll stretch out, decide against it, walk a few steps, stretch out again, think about it… and eventually he’ll go, but only pee a small amount. He doesn’t grunt or look unhappy while he goes. He also drinks a lot of water compared to the other horses at the barn.

On the flip side, he is a good weight, shiny coat, always cleans up his hay and grain. Doesn’t look unhappy or colicky when he’s eating.

Has anyone had ulcers present like this? Or does it remind you of another problem your horse has had? Of course, I’m not going to diagnose him over the internet, but it gives me good ideas to suggest to the vet.

Any suggestions welcome…

My mare did the exact same thing after her first hock injections. I posted about it on here (basically the same as your OP). She was also shiny, fat, and had never colicked. Some people suggested ulcers, I asked the vet, she agreed it sounded like ulcers. I treated for a month and tapered for a month and pony was much better. Now when we do hocks she gets a low dose of ulcergard for a few days before and after the injections. She’s been fine like that.

My vet says that the stress from hock pain (or any pain) can cause the ulcers, so I stay on top of her arthritis. It’s less expensive to do the injections slightly early than treat for full ulcers

good luck

Thanks RJC, maybe I’m not crazy! I might see if I can do a scope to find out for sure.

I had to stop giving my old Appy hock injections because one of the ingredients really upset his belly. I forget what and why, but it would strip the lining of his stomach. He had to go on a special medication to basically put the lining back the way it was. Sounds crazy I know…but we could no longer do injections on him. He was an “ulcery” Appy. We ended up using Adequan in lieu of hock injections. Ask your vet about the ingredients in the injections causing ulcers or stomach upset.

Sounds like ulcers to me. The steroids used in the injections can trigger or exacerbate ulcers, so don’t worry, you’re not crazy. And actually, a lot of what you describe before the injections sounds like ulcers, so I wouldn’t be surprised if that were the main cause of the symptoms.

In the future, if you need to do the hocks again, give a 1/4 dose of Ulcergard a day starting maybe 3 days before and 3 after the injections.
