Update- Adderall and the dog- NOT ADDERALL!

I don’t often take adderall and it’s a very low dose when I do - 5 mg extended release twice daily. I will usually put a couple of the tablets, which are teeny, in my purse to take to work as I know taking the entire bottle in is just inviting someone to steal them.

Evidently I dropped one, because my husband noticed one of our dogs licking at the floor. Upon closer inspection it was one of the pills he was fascinated with; he’d just licked at it and I doubt he’d actually have eaten it. I’ve gotten them stuck in my throat before and they are extremely bitter. DH of course put the pill out of reach.

I feel so careless and so stupid, as I know it’s quite toxic to dogs. BUT - how worried should I be? I told my husband what to look for, but should I worry over what amounted to a couple of investigative licks? Or am I overreacting out of my guilt over my carelessness?

**Got home and saw the pill my husband was talking about. It wasn’t an adderall, but generic ranitidine (heartburn meds)! Big relief but a good reminder to be super careful.

I personally would not be worried about a couple of licks, PROVIDED that you know there wasn’t another pill that had already been gobbled up.

I would call your vet or at least Animal Poison Control ASAP. You didn’t know that you dropped it, so you don’t know how many may have been dropped, right? How big is the dog/how old/breed/other health issues? Amphetamine consumption isn’t something to mess around with. Your vet may be able to help prevent absorption of the drug with something like activated charcoal, and they can monitor his vitals. I’d rather be safe than sorry.

Dog is 10 years old, 55 lbs, pill is 5 mg extended release. Husband is home with dog right now and is watching him. So far dog is just taking his usual mid-morning nap on the bed. I’ll tell DH to go ahead and call the vet. Adderall also has quite the laxative effect (can personally attest to that); so far no pooping either.

I’m usually so careful when dispensing human meds. . . .ugh.

Well I’m glad that worked out!
Maybe you need the ranitidine now
