Update: home recovering! (post 71) Emergency! Loading neuro horse

Trying to load my sudden onset neurologic horse. He can barely walk. Help! Suggestions!

Is your trailer a step up or ramp? Do you have a hill of sorts close by that you can back up to for him to use as a ramp? Or park the wheels in a big enough divot that the bumper is close to the ground. Do you have any large burly men around you can ask for help to steady him as he is walked to the trailer? Not knowing your trailer set up, be super careful and give yourself an out as he is loaded. If he goes falling and scrambling forward, you need an exfil route for yourself.

I am so sorry you’re going through this. Jingles.

Trying to get him to new Bolton center, it’s 2am here and my vet can’t come.

He is rope waking badly. I have the ramp as level as I can make it but he just won’t walk up.

So sorry this is happing and all my best wishes. Just remove any and all dividers and do whatever it takes to get him on the trailer now. Then drive. Do not stop even if you feel or hear him scramble or possibly go down. Just keep driving. New Bolton can handle whatever state he shows up in inside of the trailer. They have the means and skill to deal with a down horse even pretzelled inside a trailer and can do it very efficiently. Getting him there is literally your only hope. So do it with determination.

Godspeed. And all of my prayers. Please let us know how you and the horse are when able

Agree with this. It may take man handling him in, which will likely end up with him on the floor. Take everything out of the trailer and try to point his head away from the walls, door frames, and such. Do have someone else around in the event that you get tangled up with him. Don’t do this alone.

Yep. Whatever it takes to get him on the trailer now. It may take being mean and ugly and the exact opposite of what you would ever do IRL. But just do it now, if that is what it takes.

Agree with all of the above. Sending prayers for both of you. Please drive safely and don’t get distracted by noises behind.

After 2+ hours we got him on… He is being triaged at NBC now. He’s usually the type to walk on any trailer in the dark but when I saw how he rope walked out of his stall at midnight I was terrified. I got a 2+1 with side ramp last year after I had a neurologic horse 3 years ago who couldn’t back off a trailer. Was very grateful to have it tonight. I’m 0 for 2 here in the past 3 years so I’m very sad and scared.

We were due to go to the TIP championships tomorrow. I already had to bail bc I’m sick with covid. I will take any and all jingles.

You are in great hands. NBC saved my horse this past year, more than a few times. Who is the admitting doctor helping your boy?

And of course, sending every bit of bright light and power for you and him.
