Update: Hunched up Pom--we have a winner!

Update post vet appointment: We got a very experienced vet in our local big practice, and he pinpointed the discomfort to his thoracic spine area. We are beginning with a conservative approach, as there was no other apparent issues other than pain/stiffness. He’s on tramadol and metacam, with a follow up in 10 days. He is much happier already-the hunch is gone out of his puffy little body, and he’s resting by his favorite squeaky in front of the fireplace, so he’s no longer hiding on the bed! Yay!!

Let me preface this by saying, yes, the vet is our first call tomorrow morning.

Our Wee Pom is hunching up his back, walking in tippy-toe fashion, and crying out when he is startled awake or is picked up under his front arms. This is new-ish. He had an episode like this early this fall, but it passed in a day and we figured the old fellow (vet estimates 8-10 years old, he was a stray we got from the shelter) just played a bit too hard. He seems stiff and uncomfortable, but appetite is good, potties outside fine. He is also “shivering” when he lies on our laps, which he really wants to do (no it is not cold in here). He relaxes when I massage his back, but the discomfort seems to be in his neck mostly.

Ideas? It is so hard to listen to him cry:no:. Thanks for letting me share and for any advice.

Take him to the vet tomorrow morning, or get him to to a 24/7 ER clinic overnight tonight if he is in such pain that he won’t settle down to sleep or gets worse at all. Sounds like he has neck pain, so possible a disk problem, so in addition to the pain he is showing now, monitor him for any neuro signs, especially motor deficits or numbness in his limbs. If he shows signs of paralysis or of not feeling pain in his legs, get him to an ER clinic ASAP. In the meantime, start cage arrest now or at least restrict his activity, so no jumping, no interacting with other dogs, etc. Do not use a neck lead or otherwise use the collar to put pressure on his neck in any way until you get him checked out. Good luck!!!

Thank you! We already limit his jumping (old boy) and he doesn’t interact with the other dogs, so that isn’t a worry. He is sleeping very well, and so far, no neuro symptoms other than the crying/obvious pain. I’ll get him in tomorrow (I hope!) but I have all week off. He is such a dear little guy–has tracheal collapse and early congestive heart failure symptoms, and had 4 teeth taken out earlier this summer. He’s certainly wormed his way into our hearts.

Agreed with get him to the vet.

Sounds like a cervical disc. Rest and steroids are often recommended for conservative treatment, or MRI/ or Myelogram for surgery for a curative treatment. Nothing wrong with trying conservative first, lots of dogs do have good success with it. Dont give him any NSAIDs, just incase your vet wants to put him on steroids tomorrow.

If there are signs of ataxia (front or hind leg draging, wobbling) he will need to be seen ASAP to allow for immediate treatment of inflammation. Good luck!

Morning check-in: No change for the negative-Yay! I have vet appointment at 5pm today (only one available). He’s asleep on the bed (we lifted him) where he usually spends his days (and nights!). Did his potties and had breakfast like normal. He did find a hay pile in a stall this morning and stayed there while I did chores, until I carried him back to the house. Normally, he’d explore the paddock and barn but since this came on, he’s not moving much.

Update please!

How’d it go?

West Coast guys–leaving for appointment now. Will update ASAP.

Glad to hear he is feeling better with the meds!
