Ok so allow me to explain something that may not be obvious to all reading this stuff.

I had to ask Dr. Miller this myself. Some helmets that were originally tested no longer show up. Why not??

So here is the answer:

“That’s a great question and a good reminder for us: we did not have samples to run the additional oblique tests on those specific models and production runs and thus they did not get included… We’re going to add more models now that we’ve finalized the total test protocol with the inclusion of the oblique impacts … We had been waiting on adding new models for quite some time as this Equestrian STAR update was in progress. I suspect many of the manufacturers will retool models and develop new ones to enhance performance moving forward; especially as inventory dissipates.”

Ok so in laypeople terms…

They have added the Oblique test so now everything has to be tested with it and the scores re-calculated.

Add to that as he says, they may or may not have helmets still of each model OR Manufacturers may have created updated models based on the first round of testing. So they need to get more helmets. (The Lab buys the helmets themselves so that they are testing the same helmets that you and I can buy in stores)

So there’s a moment here where there will be some catching up and getting ahead to see how the newest helmets do in the testing with the Oblique test added.

Another FYI, the oblique impact test is what shows the MIPS safety system working. THAT is why you will see MIPS equipped helmets rise up the rankings as it is helping to diffuse the energy from the impact away from the brain of the person wearing the helmet. A helmet that does not have MIPS (Or another Slip Plane Technology safety system) will allow the energy from the impact to be taken in by their brain. Which ultimately will cause the helmet not to score as well. NOT having the oblique test in the first round of testing frustrated many folks because ALL other helmet studies have had it included. Hell the VT Bike helmet testing had it included. But now it’s back thanks to the FEI technical report.

(@RAyers can you please clean up my definition here if I have gone a bit off the rails  )

Ok so here are the current rankings:

As always, all are welcome to join my Facebook group about MIPS helmets. Just go to Fb and search “MIPS Equestrian” and you’ll find it. (The bb has a thing about Fb links )

Best.
