Upright Tack Trunks

How does everyone feel about them? I need a new tack trunk sometime in the next year or so (mine is affectionately called The Big Blue Beast and it’s just so impossible to transport and weighs a ton) and I think these ones look really practical.

How does everyone feel about them? Would I stick out like a sore thumb at an A show? I’ve just moved to a much more competitive region than I used to live in with a lot bigger shows. I don’t really want to look ridiculous, but I just find the top loading trunks to be impractical and hard to keep organized. And… I do care (at least a bit) what other people think, even though I shouldn’t .

What do you think about them? Do you see them around? In Canada in particular?

My problem with the upright trunks is that they are still very heavy. Even with wheels you have to take them in and out of the trailer. McGuinn has some that at least have heavy duty rubber wheels that can go off pavement so that might help. I do think they might stick out, but we don’t usually take trunks that don’t match.

If your definition of practical doesn’t include a limited budget, how about this:

I can’t imagine any barn objecting to this if it matched their standard style ones. Though I also can’t imagine it would be any easier to transport.

My dad built me an upright tack trunk/locker for Christmas. The main compartment has a saddle rack on top and a pair of shelves below for storage; the inside of the door has a bandage net and hooks for bridles. The top compartment is for saddle pad storage and the inside of the lid has a mirror and another bandage net. I’m also going to put a fold-down, removable saddle rack on the side. He screwed the whole thing to a two-wheel dolly that he painted to match, so it should be pretty portable… unfortunately his minivan broke down so it’s still stuck at my parents’ house until I find a way of getting it to the barn! So it’s lack of fitting-into-my-Pontiac-ability is its only drawback at this point. (:

That one’s lovely! But it’s so beautiful I don’t know if I’d actually want to have it around horses..

My coach loves a good deal so she uses the Stanley trunks for herself that are meant for tools. I just can’t seem to keep one organized though. I suppose she’s a BNT, but she’s not really into the whole matching tack trunk thing, thank goodness.

I have both a regular classic wood trunk and an upright trunk, and I like my upright trunk 1000000% better. It is far more organized, easier to move around, and doesn’t eat my tack like my wooden trunk does. I hate my non-upright trunk because it’s near impossible to find things that are at the bottom, where its dark and I have to bend over to get it, and sometimes the big heavy lid falls down on my head in the process. Awful. Right now its in storage in my basement for all the tack I never use but can’t seem to part with…

Up right all the way!

FWIW, I have 2 Oakcroft trunks that live in the barn aisle on their stands, and they are still in perfect shape. They’re well-made of pretty high quality material and vinyl covered, so they withstand the tests of barn life pretty well. When they’re outside at the horse shows, they get covered up overnight, but sit out pretty much all day. They’re quite easy to clean, as well.

The trunks you posted are pretty popular in Europe. The ones they’re selling over there (similar set up, similar materials) are currently priced around $3500. Though they appear less costly, they certainly aren’t.

I have the upright Oakcroft trunk in mahogany and brass and take it on the road with me without much trouble (I travel with two other MUCH heavier trunks, so people don’t seem to complain about the upright too much ;)), but my biggest complaint is that it’s NOT wide enough!! I keep 3 bridles, 2 saddles and 3 leather halters with lead ropes in there (as it’s designed to do) and I have to shimmy and squeeze everything in there. The saddles are fine on their own, but the bridles make everything very tight. In the future, I would probably go with McGuinn as they have width options and are generally roomier trunks, even though I like the Oakcroft style more.

i think you need to consider what exactly you’re going to be putting in your trunk. i think it’s very practical for horse shows, except that I don’t see anywhere to put a grooming bag/tote! It really depends. I like that you can put your saddle inside, but i’d NEVER use that feature except for the handful of times that I stable at the shows–probably only a few times a year. I go to a lot of A’s, but luckily my division usually only runs for one day. so, i don’t need to worry about a place to keep my saddle over night.

if you’re going to wef and HITS and all those summer/winter circuits then i think an upright trunk is very practical.

i just think it depends on what you keep in there. I don’t keep saddle pads in my trunk, and i have a rubbermaid bin for flysheets/coolers/extra blanket storage. sometimes i keep more pads in there. but in my trunk, i don’t keep a lot of small things, that would go in those drawers in the upright trunk. i don’t keep my bridle or any tack in my trunk, they all go on hooks in the tack room. i mostly keep buckets with tack cleaning stuff, some extra crap, all of my shampoos and flysprays, and other things in there. none of the things that go in my trunk would fit practically into an upright trunk, so you should really look at each feature and think ‘okay, what can i put in here that i have?’ and then think “whats left? what didn’t i manage to fit in there, and is that going to be a problem??”

so for me, an upright trunk makes no sense. to others, it’s extremely practical.

Thanks Superpony- That’s a good way to think about it- I’ll need to make some lists!.

Here’s a not-too-fabulous cell phone pic of the trunk my dad made me… was actually pretty easy to build, I believe:

Thanks! I’m considering having my Dad help me build one… Definitely less expensive, just depends on whether or not it could be done nicely in a timely manner!
