Urine odor in dry lot

The horses are kept in a 36’ x 120’ sacrifice lot since this has been the wettest year in awhile and it doesn’t seem to want to quit raining or snowing. Within this area is a 36’ x 50’ section that has been leveled and footing has been applied.

What is is the best product to apply to control the urine odor that : 1. Won’t break the bank and 2. Won’t ruin the footing by making it slick or mucky?

TIA

baking soda or lime… but if using lime use with great caution

I use PDZ which is safe but not Cheap but really isn’t super expensive either… PDZ comes in either granular or powder

Another vote for Sweet PDZ. Amazing stuff. I’ve used it in my stalls (dirt floors) for years and years. Larger quantities are cheaper overall - so buy the largest bag available. I dump mine in a plastic tub to keep the dampness out and just scoop it into a small pail for dispensing. A little goes a long way.

I’ve used this product, which I think made a difference; there are other products of this type available: https://www.valleyvet.com/ct_detail.html?pgguid=0441ef50-d64c-4ed9-a914-d9baf0fd94ca&sfb=1&itemguid=62627311-bb81-4cb9-83a7-f0b61b8e9f24&utm_content=39617&ccd=IBSE0001&utm_source=BingAds&utm_medium=shopping&CAWELAID=120295250000218067&CATARGETID=120295250000496287&CADEVICE=c&msclkid=906a0a3680b11d1a2163562aafad7793&utm_campaign=H%20Cat%20Stable%20Equip%20Supp%20(7000)%20v2%20PLA&utm_term=4584894768783638

Another vote for Sweet PDZ. It is a great stuff.

I’m surprised you have a urine odor despite nonstop rain. That’s kind of weird. Does it drain well? I have only had this problem when we were in periods of drought; I would dump and scrub water buckets in the stinky areas.

I agree that the PDZ will help but I am curious that the rain isn’t doing most of the job.

I think the main issue is that they hear me (or more likely the dogs) when I’m walking up to the barn to feed am and pm. The old pony has trained them well, pee and poop before you come into the stall to get your food. 3 horses peeing in the 36/50’ area all at the same time provides a bit overpowering amount of urine odor. It does drain in most of the locations. I have a few spots that hold water, but the horses seem to avoid those (Thanks to the huge deluge in June that caused terrible flooding. I lost a minor amount of footing due to the tremendous down pouring rain on a just graded/footing put down, but not fully compacted dry lot.) It has been too wet to get equipment back there to add more footing and compact it down. I have a few places that will need some repair, but I’ll have to make due until late spring.

I use Sweet PDZ or Stall Dry (prefer this) both are sold at Tractor Supply. The Stall Dry is a bit cheaper.

My dry lot is 200 feet from my house and dumb me didn’t really think about odor when i set up the place. I just wanted it close to the house so I could feed quickly. I have a run-in but no barn.
The horses prefer to pee where there is soft absorbent ground so it doesn’t splash on their legs. In the fall I dump leaves in a pile in the dry lot corner farthest away from the house and they all pee on that, mulch would probably work as well… Also I know some people use a sand pile and the horses will use that for poop and pee.
I’m in NC and our total rainfall this year is higher than anytime since they started keeping records! I find with this rain I don’t get the odor . I have 3 horses in 1/4 acre lot.
My lot is sand so maybe that helps especially with all this rain. I’ve hardly been able to ride because the ground is so soggy even when the rain stops for a day.
I am going to see if I can find an indoor to rent as I think this is the new normal. A road near me has been closed since Florence due to high water! Welcome to the future.
