I’ve seen some threads on this insurance and everyone seems to love it, but the threads are all 5 years old or older. Does anyone have this insurance now? How is it?
Do you mean roadside assistance or insurance?
I switched to their RA plan from AAA last year. I have had to use them once but not with a horse on board. They were efficient and prompt.
I’ve had their roadside assistance for years, have used it a couple times, and would not be without it.
Honestly, I have Farmers Ins and have my horse trailer listed separately on my plan with its own “roadside assistance.” Had to use it last year while hauling when I blew a tire on the Interstate that also blew my fender off, and from what the threads described, I got the same service I would have with US Rider. Called, got a tow truck, he changed my tire with the horse aboard and removed the dangling fender for me so I could drive away.
I understand that US Rider does have some sort of service that will get a vet if you have an emergency? But Googling on your smartphone can do that as well, and COTH has come to the rescue for people stranded who need a ride.
I have US rider. Last year on the way to championships, one of the trailers in our convoy blew a tire. We all pulled over and I called US Rider. They weren’t concerned that it wasn’t my trailer, or even the truck/trailer combo I was riding in, just someone travelling with us. They sent someone out to change the tire, without removing the horses from the trailer. It was quick and painless. I have used US Rider in the past for vehicle lock outs, and I’ve had nothing but good experiences with them. Totally worth it in my book.
Have had US Rider for 2 years, love them. Have had to call 3 x, never with a horse related. The person on the phone is always so concerned about my horse, or trailer, and almost disappointed that I don’t have the additional complication for them to help me with, LOL. But always fixed my problem promptly, and in one case jumped through hoops to reimburse me for a tow service, even though I didn’t exactly follow their policy and they could have denied it.
Shortly after each episode I receive an email asking me how they did, if they could improve the service in any way.
Well worth the slightly higher than AAA cost to have the comfort that they would help me with a horse and trailer too if I needed it. Before I had US Rider I broke down hauling a fractious TB by myself on I 95, shortly after emerging from the Baltimore Tunnel (shudder to think of breaking down with horse in a tunnel!!) After that experience never want to be without US Rider to call!
Awesome folks IME!

Some of us don’t have smart phones.
I’ve had US Rider for 15+ years now. I’ve only used it a couple of times (most recent was two years ago getting my Kia towed from my driveway due to a broken alternator) but they have been good experiences. I have one of those drive-on ramps for changing a tire on the trailer without unloading. Well worth the $50 I paid for it.
Have had USrider road assistance for the past 15 years. Used it 4x, twice on the minivan, twice on truck & trailer. All times fast and courteous. The last time drove the truck & trailer off the side of the road in the back hills of Virginia. USR didn’t have a contracted service available. We told them of a heavy tow service in the area. USR immediately contracted with them to rescue us. The tow rig they sent was bigger than our combined truck & trailer. The three couples with us on that trip, have joined USR because of our rescue.
I especially like they answer the call with “Are you and the animals safe ?” They are expecting to help you deal with horses, trailers, and dually trucks. There is no question of coverage unlike some AAA programs…
AAA where I live will not cover diesel vehicles or horse trailers, so you might want to check with your local AAA office to make sure they will actually take care of your vehicles in an emergency. Even their RV plan and Plus Plans would not cover them.
I’ve had US Rider for years. Finally “got” to use it for the first time on a painfully incident-filled trip to Calgary last summer. First call was a dead battery on my tow vehicle at 3am on a Sunday night (or I guess Monday morning at that point!). Had a momentary freakout that I was calling USRider from Canada…but they had no issues and got to work right away on finding me a boost. Had to call them a couple of additional times on the trip, and boy did they save my bacon that trip!
Wouldn’t feel right not having it now that I’ve had it as a backup for so long!
Glad to hear all the good reviews. We’re going to go ahead and get it. Now the only question is whether to get it for me and my husband (we’re the ones who tow), or to just get it for my daughter, who is a driver but doesn’t tow, but she’s almost always in the truck when we’re towing. She’s the only rider in the family. Then my son and I would stay on AAA, which is cheaper. (Husband has no roadside assistance and just fends for himself, being a guy and pretty handy.) I’ve done short trips with an empty trailer without my daughter to get the trailer serviced, but normally if the trailer is hitched, she’s present in the truck.
We have USrider for myself, husband, and older daughter. My husband has needed to have the car towed twice. He found USrider to be very good; much better than when we had AAA.

While Google is great there are some intricacies of the service that are well worthwhile. I blew a tire in the middle of nowhere Iowa on my way from the Northeast to the Northwest. They found someone to help me but once the tire was swapped (at night) I didn’t have a spare. I called them back and told them thanks, but could they also find someone open now, on the way to X (where I would be stopping for the night) that could provide me with a new spare trailer tire that is a special size, blah, blah, blah. They were great - tracked my route - called everyone in my direct path, tracked down the exact tire on the way and had it ready and waiting when I pulled in. It would have taken a lot of doing and not driving for me to accomplish the same so they more than earned their membership fee, in my eyes.
It’s great and I tell people with AAA to ditch it and get US Rider because it is better. I have enough of my own maps.
But US Rider costs twice as much as AAA. So I don’t know that I want all 4 family members on it when I could leave my son on AAA. Just need to figure out who needs to be on what policy and may look into the Roadside Assistance that my car insurance offers. I need to figure out what combination works best for us.
Since it is just my husband and I, cost is not a concern. I have had it for 5ish years and seem to need it about once a year, though thankfully never with a loaded trailer. But I would be super grateful that they will deal with a loaded trailer. I would never want to have to depend on getting a good enough signal on my phone to get the 'net to get help if I had horses on the trailer. Also love that it will cover any loaded trailer that I am “with”.
One thing that I really like about the service is that there is never an issue with my dually getting service/towed. Not always the case with many other tow services.
US Rider was actually cheaper for me and my husband than AAA so I ditched AAA. I LOVE it and would never, ever put my horse on the trailer without it again.
Have had USRider for years. Last year the serpentine belt broke while hauling. They were able to get a flat bed truck to take the truck and we hitched the trailer to the flat bed. Took the horse home and dropped the trailer and then truck off to the shop. It was a local trip so it didn’t exceed my towing limit. No charge for me at all. If they had not been able to get a flat bed, they said they would have sent 2 tow vehicles to get my truck to the shop and my horse safely home. I wouldn’t haul with out them.

AAA is I think around $65 for me and $40 for my son. US Rider would be $130 or so for me and $80 for a second person. So twice as much. I just have basic AAA, so 3 only 3 miles towing, but I’ve only been towed once. I think it’s going to be best for us to get Roadside Assistance through GEICO, which will cover each car for pretty cheap, then USRider for either my husband and me, or just for my daughter who is usually with the trailer.
Signed up for USRider today. I put it in my daughter’s name. I feel better already.
