USDF hacked?

It appears the USDF has been hacked as far as member emails being exposed. Got this email this morning:
Are you available to assist? I am out of the State now and I’ve got credence in you to take care of this.I would have called your phone but I presently do not have access to my mobile phone.

United States Dressage Federation <USDF>,needs some gift cards for donation to Veterans at Hospice and Palliative care units for preventive items against Corona Virus Disease ( COVID-19).

I have decided to make it a personal duty. I will be responsible for the reimbursement.

Lisa Gorretta,President.

USDF.

I got a similar email from out GMO president last week, where her GMO public email was compromised. Ugh.

yes, second time in recent weeks.

I got the same email yesterday from the “president” of my GMO. I recognized it right away as a scam.

The originating email is not hacked, it is just spoofed.

It has been going on for years. I am on the board of a local GMO / CTA and I regularly get such emails (asking me to buy gift cards) that purport to come from the president of that GMO/CTA. But it is only the “display name” that pretends to be the president of the organization. The actual email address is clearly someone else. When we elected a new president I started getting spoofed emails from the new president within a couple of weeks. I do not even bother to report them anymore.

I am friends with Lisa and this has happened maybe half a dozen times in the last 6 months. Janet is correct - if you actually look at the email address of the sender it is clear that it is not from USDF. I get them all the time from PayPal/eBay/Apple and just report them to the spoof@… email.

just wondering, how did the spoofer get my email address unless they got into the usdf member database? I understand getting emails like this from people I correspond with or if I am in their address book but just curious

I expect your email is findable many other places.

I get these spoofed emails from all kinds of organizations I have no dealings with like credit card companies and cell phone providers and airlines. Its possible everyone in your town is getting these spoofed emails from the USDF, or that the spoofers got some random horsey sddress list.

USDF may sell their lists to sponsors, who then got hacked. Or USDF did indeed get hacked.

I’m just cringing at the misuse of the word “credence.”
