USEA Rule Guru's I need your expertise!

Hi. I have a question on membership with USEF as it pertains to USEA. My horse is going to go Prelim with another rider. Horse has his lifetime registration and rider is qualified and has his USEF number. I used to belong to USEF but now I am only going Training so don’t want to spend the money to renew. The horse and rider are entered in an event at Prelim. Only deficiency is Owner USEF#. What? Do I have to be a member so someone else can ride my horse at Prelim?

Thanks!

Yes - see USEF General Rule 202. This is the first “paragraph”. This info is available online at www.usef.org
GR202 Membership Requirements

  1. To be eligible to participate as a rider, driver, handler, vaulter, longeur, owner, lessee, agent, coach or trainer at Regular Competitions, Eventing Competitions at the Preliminary Level or above, Dressage Competitions, Combined Driving Competitions at the Advanced Level, Endurance Rides, Reining Competitions, ParaEquestrian Competitions, and Vaulting Competitions, persons must be Members of the Federation as provided in Bylaw 201. No organization, other than the USEF and its Recognized Breed and Discipline Affiliates, may require mandatory membership or a non-member fee as a condition of participation in a USEF Licensed Competition. (See GR1210.14 for further information regarding the collection of mandatory participation fees at USEF licensed competitions).

Perfect! Thank you! I was looking for that ruling and I could not find it. Of course, I am doing this at work so was scanning through it and not reading it completely!

Lurker be sure you get the full, competing membership. That’s the one you need and if you get the lower-priced membership, it won’t fly.

Thanks! I already did it that way but good to know for the future!

The USEA has a really good chart on membership requirements
http://www.useventing.com/resource/membership-and-horse-registration-requirements-chart

For Owners at Prelim and above, it says:

USEA membership not required
USEF membership required or
USEF: Collect $30 non-member fee

As an owner of a horse competing at Prelim, you have two options: USEF membership, or pay the non-member fee (now called, IIRC, the “Show Pass” fee).

But, unless you are only going to do it ONCE, you are better off joining USEF

I made this mistake. You need this for dressage shows too. I joke now that I am able to compete a horse that I do not ride. Yay me!
