Used saddle question...fleece

On a whim I went to the tack store today to see what they have, as I now need a saddle with a narrower twist. The girl showed me a used saddle that I brought home and rode in tonight. I liked it - it has a close contact feel but isn’t too wide for my current hip injury that has been going on for a while now.

Saddle is stamped that it was custom made for someone, and the saddlery is actually local to me so I’m going to call and ask my question, which is…

Why would the fleece be replaced on one side of the saddle?

I tried to bend and twist it to see if the tree was broken, but I didn’t notice anything, and Mac went really well in it.

Thoughts?

Here’s a picture.

Off the top of my head I’d say it probably got eaten.

Thanks, I didn’t even think of that!

Yeah, who knows what lurks in the hearts of tack rooms? Maybe mice got to it, maybe it was snagged and torn (can happen) maybe a dog went to town on it.

Looks like genuine fleece on a nice saddle so worth thinking about if it fits your horse, you, and your needs.

Since the fleece on the other side appears to be in good shape (just a little faded), I am guessing that something damaged the other side and they didn’t feel the need to replace both sides. When I have gotten quotes on replacing fleece it wasn’t cheap, so if I didn’t have to replace both sides I wouldn’t.

Thanks, everyone!
