About two weeks ago, I woke up to discover roughly $15 debited from my checking account by Manhattan Life.
I used to have health insurance through USEF and let myself be sold on a couple extra Manhattan Life policies, all of which I canceled several years ago.
Called my bank, reported it as a fraudulent charge then fell down a rabbit hole.
Manhattan Life told me they couldn’t do anything about the policy and that I would have to talk to the agent, which was USEF.
The woman I spoke with at USEF member services seemed to have no idea what was going on, and at first, even suggested that I had the wrong USEF.
She then told me that I would have to call Thompson Benefit & Enrollment Group.
There, a woman told me, in the vaguest of terms, it would be taken care of and, when I pushed her for some kind of confirmation, assured me that I would get an email (or something).
Long story short, my bank gave me my 15 bucks back but I’ve been on a tear of phone calls to both Manhattan Life and Thompson (where, at one point, a guy said something like “oh, you’re one of the $15 people.”). I keep getting correspondence from ML, including a letter over the weekend telling me that I’ve been enrolled in paper billing since my ACH payment had been “declined.”
During the “$15 people” call to Thompson, I was told that “the system” signed a bunch of former customers up for insurance policies and charged their bank accounts. But he would take care of it blah blah blah.
Then today, I got a BILL in the mail from Manhattan Life for this policy.
Aside from a policy being opened without my knowledge or consent, can we just say I’ve been livid that they retained my banking information? Manhattan Life told me Thompson sent it to them, while someone at Thompson told me Manhattan Life was the one that had my banking information.
Sunday (after I belatedly checked my mail and found the letter enrolling me in paper billing), I emailed Thompson, USEF, and ML threatening to file complaints in three states.
A guy from Thompson emailed me back practically immediately (on a Sunday!) and promised to look into it. Last interaction, I spoke to a woman from Thompson, whom – not gonna lie – I was pretty awful to on the phone. But she promised me my information was gone from their system. She also said something that implied there was a s**t show going on “behind the scenes.”
So, any other $15 people? Also, USEF insurance = 20/10 do not recommend.
