USEF to test equine hair

Nice timing here too. Smack in the middle of summer show season with big circuits already in progress. Lots of scrambling going on and lawyers on speed dial. Something, IMO, they really got right here. No lengthy bureaucratic delays just enforcing existing rules and doing something for horse welfare.

Would have been even better not to announce it and just take the hair samples for testing. I am interested to see if they do target people about whom they’ve had concerns.

Yes, for no other reason then stop the rumors and prove them clean-if they are clean they should welcome this. Do suspect some will not welcome this at all and a court injunction will be sought.

I got lots of popcorn and will watch COTH for the next few weeks.

IMO USEF doesn’t do enough to protect the horse. What rules will they be bending?

And euthanasia solution IS being used to quiet horses.

I bred a horse who went down in the hunter ring on a turn at hits, then at another AA show not long after. Nothing done at either show. A few months later her ankle blew out and there was no saving her.

Not even looking at the ethics and humane treatment aspect

People are jumping horses that are so drugged they are going down.

In-san-it-y.

Edit: AND - trainers are so blase about it, they are unconcerned about putting their clients on horses they KNOW are heavily sedated. Can you imagine the lawsuit if Pookie has a rotational on Suzie, that Trainer Man drugged too far?

It’s not always sedation; it is often exhaustion and/or dehydration.

Which, IMO, still falls under the trainer’s umbrella.

Lots of Suzies expect to show up to a ready horse. They wouldn’t know if the horse was right or wrong if they needed to. The trainer should know.

And - the way you worded your comment is just nauseating - “often.” What the eff are people doing supporting this circus at all? I know there are people here who like to imply there’s unchecked drugging going on at schooling shows, but I’ll tell you what - I’ve never seen a horse collapse at one, let enough horses collapsing that a rule needed to be made, so there’s that.

It is reality. Actions I have not done or condoned.

Apologies - it was not aimed at you, more of a general comment. It’s just sickening, that this is the reality of the show world.

I don’t regret for one minute that outside of local stuff with local people who love horses, I am not in this scene. Count me right out.

Thank you!
The reality for me is that the more I know about the “winners” is the less I would EVER send them a horse.

About time.

Having a horse trip - on the flat or over fences - is among the most dangerous falls you can have. The rider just becomes a lawn dart or squished or both. Absolutely horrifying anyone would risk that.

Have you never been to a hunter show?

A LOT of horses are body clipped in the summer and almost all of them are body clipped for winter shows.

They are talking about pulling mane or tail hairs.
