USEF/USDF Membership Requirements

Can any of you tell me what is currently required for showing to avoid the non-member fees?

If I register my horse with USDF, does that mean I don’t need to pay a fee for the horse ID through USEF? Or do I have to do both? USDF states the following which kind of confused me:

Does the USEF also require a HID number to compete?

Yes, they do, however, for horses competing in a recognized dressage competition, there is no need to complete an application for a USEF HID number if you already have a USDF HID or USDF Lifetime Registration, or are planning on completing an application for either at a competition. USDF will provide USEF with your horse and owner information, thus meeting the USEF requirements. You can use the horse number issued by USDF for any USEF-licensed/USDF-recognized dressage competition.

I also need to get a rider membership through USDF and my local GMO, correct? Is there a required rider membership for USEF as well or just the horse?

Anything else I’m missing?

Yes, it looks like a USDF horse number is enough.

I plan to enter my first recognized dressage show(s) this year, so I have the same type of questions. My horse has a lifetime USEF number, so does that mean it counts as a USDF number?? (I understand I have to transfer his USEF ownership to my name through USEF, since I’m a new owner!) I’m a participating member of USDF, so does that count for USEF?

I don’t have a local GMO but our area is Region 8, though. I was planning to call USDF directly to ask all these silly questions but would love to read the COTHer’s response.

Here is the checklist put out by USDF: http://www.usdf.org/competitions/competitors/membership-checklist.asp

You have to be careful as things are not interchangeable. A horse registration with USDF will get you a horse ID with USEF, but it is not true the other way around. (a horse ID or recording with USEF doesn’t count for USDF)

The horse, rider, and owner all have to have memberships with USDF and USEF to avoid non-member fees. But there are various levels of each. At minimum, you need HID numbers for the horse from both organizations, GMO membership with USDF for rider and owner, and Active membership with USEF for rider, owner, and trainer (if they are different people). That will get you in the ring, but if you want to go for regional championships or year end awards, you need the upgraded memberships and horse recordings.

The chart should help,

Also remember, if you aren’t looking for USDF points/recognition, Opportunity classes at the lower levels require NO memberships of horse and rider!

Bumping this thread.

Looking to enter a USDF show and riding a horse I do not own. The entry form has a place for the owner’s USEF or USDF number. Is this actually required? The horse has a USDF # and I have a USEF & USDF memberships.

Yep, owner also needs to be USEF/USDF member, or you pay non-member fees.
