USEF/USEA membership questions--a little confused!

I’m new to eventing and currently don’t have a membership with any organization. I’m going to start out doing unrecognized events, but I’d like to eventually move up to doing some recognized ones. Do I need to be a member of both USEF and USEA for recognized events? If I join USEF, is USEA included with that? I’m not sure how that all works together or if USEA is at all associated with USEF?

Thanks!

Good morning!

You only need to be a member of USEA for BN through Training levels. You don’t really need to be a member to compete at sanctioned events at BN, but will have to pay a non-member fee each time if you aren’t an active member. Your horse will need to be registered with USEA for Novice & up.

You will need to join USEF (in addition to USEA) once you are competing preliminary, and by then you’ll know all the ins and outs of memberships to the various organizations.

Welcome to the wonderful world of eventing, and never hesitate to ask questions. We’re a friendly lot, and there is much to learn!

Thanks so much!! I registered an account with USEA but did not sign up as a member yet–I will probably do that this spring unless there is some benefit to signing up earlier than that? My horse is very green and will only be doing starter/BN this summer. He will probably max out at prelim (he’s fine boned and I’m more afraid of him getting injured.)

I have my horse registered as restricted right now–will I need to change that status for novice/training when the time comes? Or can he stay as restricted until we try prelim in several years?

Limited registration is all that is required until you reach preliminary level.

The USEA has a pretty good chart with all the membership requirements

That appears to be the 2013 version. There are a couple of new tweaks for Canadian riders, but I am not sure if they are 2014 or 2015.

WOW thank you so much!!! That’s exactly what I need, makes everything so simple!
